i'm of the same mindset, but far be it from me to question the policeman that was sitting in my living room and telling me as much.

sounds about right!

Yes, i have a reg plate. Could be him, but i can't be certain. He was dressed the same as he was on Monday and Tuesday when he came, and was definitely wearing the same sunglasses.

Have you given the car registration number to the police. When they check his details if he lives quite near you it would seam strange to be sitting in his car by your block of flats so could be your man.

Excuse my ignorance here, it appears he only turns up on his own, have you not thought about having a couple of mates with you at a pub / café opposite or wherever maybe appropriate, out of the line of sight, then when the scrote is in your mailbox confront him?

No I have read the whole thread so I know the course of events.I dont want to be harsh on you but you say that you feel that you have done enough investigations yet you do not know the guys name or address and followed him once but lost him so it looks like you are no Sherlock Holmes.
What sort of gronk are you??

It's probably not the best idea to follow this turkey. You have no idea what he may be capable of or what sort of disease (seriously) he could infect you with if you got into a scuffle. He could even be armed with a nasty pointy stabby thing.

Some of these mail thief grubs are out on bail for same/other offences, and if they get caught they could get jailed again so they have motivation to not be caught or dobbed in lightly.

Give the info you have to the police. If I were you i'd also make up a nice colour poster to put up near the mailboxes with his happy face and a warning for other residents. Hopefully old mate will see it and bugger off. Very poor response from your local cops though. Can always help to ring their station and ask for the supervisor and explain what the go is.

The local police neighbourhood team will have a Twitter presence. Tweet them the photo with a brief description?

I'm now fairly certain that the car that was parked yesterday belonged to the guy.

I was out last night, but came home in the early hours of the morning to a letter slid under my door from the woman downstairs. He had turned up at 1730 to try his luck then, but she chased him off.

Not sure if he'll be back at his regular time today, but as I'm a little hungover I'll probably work from home again and have a look out.

I just realised i didn't explain why i thought it was his car yesterday.. I was standing at the end of my street so that i could see the mailboxes, but could hide round the corner and start the call to the police without him hearing and hopefully be in a better position to follow him.. Unfortunately the property management company had turned up and were cleaning the door, hall and mailboxes and were there for a good 30 minutes right at the exact time that he should have been there.

After it got to 2 o'clock i realised that he probably wasn't going to show up - but also realised that the car i was standing beside had someone in it. The window was open a bit, and the guy inside was dressed exactly the same as the guy i saw on on Mon/Tue. I couldn't see his face because the drivers window was tinted (the passenger window wasn't!). I walked away to then try and keep my eye on the car and see if he would get out, but he didn't. I walked back to the car, but he had now put the window up and i couldn't see in.

Called the police and asked them to attend - they'd be there within an hour. He drove off a few minutes later after he saw me going back in to the flat.

I think that's why he came back at 1730.. when my neighbour saw him and chased him away.

If he's so persistent on nicking mail from your block he must be expecting stuff.

How much would it cost to replace the lock and give all the tenants a new key?

Ask your local police station if their crime prevention person can visit the premises.

That's what I'm thinking - it must be pretty unusual for a criminal to get chased away then come back.
That letter from the police is depressingly generic.

This guy's whole life is probably supported by such crime, he won't just be raiding/using one address, he will have dozens.

It would be easy for the police to clear up a substantial problem, but they can't be bothered (it would take one tempting GPS'd parcel left, no manpower, just a text alert when it moved, then go and arrest and search for evidence of his whole career).

Cut's init. (No it aint).

If you are only capable of doing one thing, make sure you do it well...
