He should have been shot and killed in those circumstances, and I've no doubt if the officers were armed then he would have been. It's farcical that most officers still walk around with a little can of chemical spray and a collapsible metal stick.

I believe that firearms officers carry tasers and if they had been at the scene then these would have been used rather than firearms. He's clearly an idiot or off his head on something but shooting him dead when an alternative exists would be rather inappropriate (not that I'd be terribly heartbroken about it). Just imagine the headlines, "Vulnerable promising young footballer murdered by trigger happy cops" etc.

Even a Taser is hit and miss (literally) with a knife threat. The only want a knife is going to hurt you is when you're close (save for some Ninja throwing it at you). Distance is key. A baton gun would be the best less lethal option, but they aren't exactly in every police car!

2 of my taser deployments have been similar jobs, it's amazing how fast a bloke can close you down, add into that the length of an arm and the weapon (one occasion was a 3 foot machete) and it's even less. Luckily I managed to get some decent probe placement so it was a job well done. I'd have much preferred a bit more to play with that 21 feet!

Baton guns haven't been used for ages in my force although we are trained in public order tactics that incoperates their use.

I'm sure the leftys would have a field day if someone got a rubber slug to the guts and wasn't tickled and kissed into submission though.

It was good work.

I've seen a comparable amount of force used on drunk lads that are being a bit lippy.

Indeed, I take it you're familiar with 'the Tueller drill'?

If they'd run off and the chap had then gone on to stab someone else, there'd be a 50 page thread full of condemnation by Sec136man and his cronies.
To be fair, I don't think they would be.....they are far too busy patting each other on the back in the American Cops thread.

I'm a bit in shock that Ben Fellows has been acquitted of making false claims that Ken Clarke MP groped him.

...knife wheeling thugs.
Do you mean "wielding"?

Most of the police officers I've met have seemed to be a pretty professional lot but I've also seen some sloppy, rude and downright idiotic policing too.

Unfortunately some police officers, in common with members of any organisation, seem to develop a siege mentality whereby they become very defensive and perceive any outside criticism to be "anti-police". In reality a lot of the critics of poor policing are generally supportive of the aims of the police in general.

I don't know. Maybe I did. Or maybe he was wheeling it around, as in, like a wheel. Either way, I think it's fairly clear what I meant.

I have also met some sloppy, rude and downright idiotic police officers. And paramedics. And lawyers, firemen, doctors, refuse collectors, and dentists. In reality, a lot of the critics on here are not supportive of the police. Starting a reply with "I am not anti police/I am not police bashing/etc" does not necessarily make it so. Most of the police officers I know are completely professional. Most of the paramedics, lawyers, firemen, doctors and refuse collectors are also very professional.

Yes. Some police officers see any attack as anti police. And sometimes they would be spot on with this assessment. Some people are downright idiotic in their attacks on the police. Swings, and roundabouts.

I want to put this to everyone out of general interest. 2 part question.

1. Bearing in mind recent threads about overtly armed AFO's doing normal duties, if this cop had been armed and had shot the subject, what would your reaction be?

2. Think about how far 21 feet is (max range of a Taser). Now image you have a Taser and a Pistol both holstered and this guy starts sprinting at you from 21 feet away with this knife. Which weapon will you draw and use?

Please answer totally truthfully about your own thoughts and justifications. Just curious.

Taser.

Eta: less paperwork and suspension than slotting the prick.

1) fine - reasonable face when faced with a genuine threat to your life, shoot him, head butt him, tazer him, bite him, baton him over the head. All reasonable when someone is trying to disembowel you.

If you had an armed officer you'd very likely have two. One with a Taser and one with a sidearm if it fails would a safe and proportionate response.

I would expect this chap would have surrendered if he were facing armed officers. He, fortunately, wasn't that determined to do the officers harm.

Having a bright yellow taser on your belt certainly changes the way people behave towards you. I suspect had the usual taser warnings been shouted upon officers seeing the knife he would have played ball and behaved himself.
