Who can be a registered keeper?
Discussion
My friend has just bought a new van and the dealer has registered it in his sole trader company name. She did this without asking and he just got the V5 today. Vehicle is not due till next week.
I know a ltd company can own a car but a sole trade name is not an entity so short of adding a keeper onto the V5 is there anything he can do about this?
His insurance surely will require the van to be in his name too I would think?
Any advice?

He was never asked, apparently someone in the admin department decided to look at his business name and then stick that on as the registered keeper.
On the positive side though, after a phone call to the DVLA they advised that the original RK can be changed without adding an extra owner as long as the dealership wrote a letter to say they had made an error.
The dealership eventually agreed to do this.

Just out of interest, can a 4 year old be a registered keeper?
https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/does_the_re...The registered keeper would need to declare who the driver was. No different to company vans etc. Company van/car is assigned to a driver, company as registered keeper gets NIP they inform the assigned driver who has to accept the NIP or prove it wasn't him/her. just saying it wasn't me gov. doesn't cut it. Which is why vehicles with multi-drivers should have a log.

He IS the sole trader. Whether he also trades under a different name or not makes no difference - "XYZ Window Cleaners" and "Dave Smith" are exactly the same legal entity.I know a ltd company can own a car but a sole trade name is not an entity

I can tell 'em for a fact about one <16yo was was a registered keeper. Me. I bought my first car when I was 15, and registered it in my name.
Well yes, it doesn't say that you can't - they say that they accept applications in good faith and that under 16 is against policy?Drumroll said:

How would a not existent registered keeper declare this, also how are they going to chase the registered keeper if the RK name does not relate to an actual person living at that address? PAULJ5555 said:

They can't. Obviously. Which is why any car with a non-existent RK gets flagged up as soon as that becomes obvious, then ANPR will point a nice big finger at it. TooMany2cvs said:

I got a V5 through with a complete mis-spelling of my name once. Almost like someone headbutted the keyboard partway through my name.
Still ended up through my letter box though, and since that person doesn't exist I can only assume you could purchase a car from an individual and write "Clark Kent" or the name of your 4 year old child, and I doubt they would bad an eyelid.
Getting pulled over, or recieving a fine however could put you (as the childs guardian) in some hot st regarding perverting the course of justice/fraud etc.
The difference may be that when DVLA put the random name on it was OK, but they might refuse an application if YOU used the same name, as they should vet incoming more than outgoing!Still ended up through my letter box though, and since that person doesn't exist I can only assume you could purchase a car from an individual and write "Clark Kent" or the name of your 4 year old child, and I doubt they would bad an eyelid.

This bit is confusing.

Please be aware that if an untrue or made up name is shown as the registered keeper on record then there will be problems when the vehicle needs to be taxed as there is a need to have a valid insurance policy for the vehicle.
There is no requirement for a vehicle's insurance to be held by the RK.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
