Yup.

Part of a two year 'trial'.......

They're around each major entry/exit on the route from Northolt right up to the Paddington turn off. Spanning 50, 40, 30, 40 zones (including the entire westway @40mph).

Dire.

You won't get very far complaining about these cameras on here!! I want to know to who we complain to about these things, they have 100's of thousands to spend on putting up the cameras but cannot repair the road or provide any traffic cars to actually stop the idiots that drive up and down the raod every day!!

Traffic flow into London would be so much better served by vaporising the countless tts pushing in at the exit off to the gyratory stuffing up this lane's flow and also utterly bksing 50% of the A40 whilst they sit stationary waiting to bully their way in

A phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range should do the job - conventional weaponry would leave too much debris

Regularly drive from Polish to near IKEA. I can count on one hand the number of times I've thought someone fast was driving dangerously. The ones who need to be stopped are those cutting in, driving at 35 in the middle lane and generally being completely unaware of anything going on around them. And of course anything with Addison Lee on it. Whole thing boils my piss.

On the thread a few months ago someone linked to the press release where they basically admitted the film cameras have been switched off for some time (some like the one on the approach to IKEA eastbound were removed sometime ago). This provides the perfect data for a controlled experiment to be able to tell if cameras really do make a difference to the accident rate. What are the chances that information will ever see the light of day?

This. Maybe use some limited EM Effector munitions for clear up. Gridfire for the ones in Audis.

The annoying bit is the Westway flyover. Why this 3 lane road with no exits, pavements, etc is 40mph, who knows (other than it being a response to the same engineering problems which have beset Hammersmith flyover....). It used to be a regular 90-100mph ride...

Some of these f.wits will give themselves a totting up ban prior to receiving the first (of many) NIP....

PS the first Vector camera in the series is hidden behind the gantry immediately as you get on the flyover from the end of the Marylebone road. It's hard to spot, but you can definitely see the "arrow" marks on the road.
Wait whaaaaat? So from Marylebone road joining the flyover there's a camera? So going from there to Westfield its 40mph?!

There goes my favourite bit of road in London...

Where do you typically write in and complain about stupidity like this?

Drove back out of town this morning on a virtually empty A40, the only potential cause of an accident was the local hood driving his lowered A3 with a phone clamped to his right ear, a jazz fag in his left hand whilst steering the car! How refreshing to know that my speed was being monitored all the way along the 2/3 lane empty road!!

Whilst we're having a moan and someone mentioned the Hanger Lane gyratory, it's bad enough that 2 lanes have to filter into 1 for the A40, but ***** that make it 3 or sometimes 4 into 1. mad

Also does 'Stay in Lane' mean move immediately across the hatched area and the stay in lane markings? confused

Even more OT, but does anyone know what they are doing on the North Circ around Neasden where they seem to be making openings in the central reservations as if there are going to be right-hand turns??

They are going to be remodelling the IKEA junction around there, including a left turn slip from Southbound. Don't know if that barrier work is connected though

On a bikers' forum I read that someone had made a freedom of information request on the A40 average speed cameras and the response said that they don't go live until next month, when appropriate signage will be erected. I hope that's right or I - and many others - are buggered!

I recall the days when large sections of this route were NSL, so 70 as it's dual carriageway. Even the elevated section from White City Stadium (showing my age) to the start of the Marylebone Road was all 70mph.

But then again, you had a half hour queue to get thru the lights at Hanger Lane, before the Gyratory system and the underpass existed.

Remeber looking at the marylebone flyover being built as a 7 year old looking out of my flat bedroom window 1965,what I do remember was the hundreds and hundreds of rats that it all let out and were scampering everwhere,

I take your point but see: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/new_cameras...

Certainly, the traffic on my regular commute from the M40 onto Marylebone Rd is so far carrying on as usual. I anticipate a degree of frustration from those who don't realise regarding those who do, as and when the cameras go live!

There are now over 7 average speed cameras on the A40 into and out of London.

The way they work is:
each camera sends video to a computer
the computer scans the video looking for number plates
when it sees one it:
1) records the picture
2) reads and records the registration number
3) records the time

So, for each camera, there's a picture of every vehicle that passed, with it's No plate and the time.

The computers then subtract the times of each vehicle between cameras and, knowing the distance between each camera, they can see if any vehicle reached a following camera in a time shorter than is allowed. If so, that vehicle must have travelled faster than the limit.

Note, it doesn't matter what speed you pass each camera. You could do 80mph past every camera and you shouldn't be prosecuted for speeding, so long as you stop for a while in between each pair of cameras!

You'll also note that every single vehicle is photographed, speeding or not, time and time again as it travels. This means the authorities know where every single vehicle was, and when it was there, day or night, all of the time. They might also see from the photographs how many occupants in each vehicle, age, sex, descriptions etc. This can be very useful to track terrorists, criminals, demonstrators, activists, political opposition groups, and anyone else the authorities may wish to monitor.
