The new Average speed cameras on the A40 /westway West Lond
Discussion
Noticed what look like the new average speed cameras on the A40 inbound covering the entire 50 section (miles!), and posssibly the 40 section following it as well. A glance across showed at least one set on the outbound carriageway as well. However, I've not seen the cameras before. L-shaped mark on the road. Yellow, rear-facing camera. Two of them overhead covering three lanes. Round body.
First set by camera at end of Northolt, second by Perivale, third by Hanger Lane turn-off.
Anyone know what it is? What's really needed is a jamming-on-the-brakes-in-lane-2-and-cutting-in-late-to-the-junction-and-using-the-cross-hatchings camera.

i noticed them too and I don't think they look exactly like the cameras above, a bit shorter with a couple of aerials stuck up vertically on the back panel. Why dont they just go the the whole hog and fit speed limiters to cars? Stupid me, that would stop them raking in ridiculous amounts in fines...

Do they look anything like these Siemens SafeZone cameras?
We've had a bunch of these average speed cameras pop up over Bedford Borough with |_ _| shaped markings on the road surface.
I think that's the fella. I'll take another look when there's not someone jamming on their brakes and cutting in at the last minute...We've had a bunch of these average speed cameras pop up over Bedford Borough with |_ _| shaped markings on the road surface.
There are ANPR cameras there for the LEZ and I don't think these are the same.

Seems to be another average speed zone trial site, joy...

Good of them to close two lanes of the A40 last night and create mile-long tailbacks to install another one of these. Siemens trucks at the location so assume that confirms the type posted above.
If it makes the whole road safer, as suggested, why not put the speed limit up where there is average speed enforcement? I think I'd be much more amenable to a bit of "conveyor belt" motoring if it meant I was going 20 mph faster.

And what time of day would you rather they installed them?I'd also think a little bit of advance signage if restricting one of London's arterial roads wouldn't go amiss. Give traffic a chance not to join the queue and make things worse. Particularly the A4 / A40 which can so ably substitute for one another. There were big signs about the closure of Hanger Lane tunnel, but nothing in advance about this.
Come on, you don't think the left hand talks to the right hand, do you? Just look at all the closures on the M3, A3 and roadworks on the A30 a couple of months ago overnight... and the current closures on the M3, A322 and A30. Makes some areas complete no-go zones.
How do I get to West End from here? "If I were you, mate, I wouldn't start from here."

Pay particular attention to the part that says they can enforce speeding over junctions even on a green light

These are starting on first sep from the Polish War memorial Hillingdon right through to and including the Westway ( if anyone knows the area) Thing is for example if you go through the first one at The Polish and come off at say hanger lane or maybe before ie northolt or greenford or perivale can it still determine your av speed?? As we know on Motorways there is a beginning and an end usually. Any thoughts?
Yep. The average speed can be determined between any two of the circa 10 Vector cameras along the entire 13 mile route. It could be #1 and#6, #3 and #5, or between all of them, etc. etc. There is no escape. Annoyingly, there is a 30mph limit in place under Hangar Lane roundabout.
Most of the traffic has already slowed right down in advance of it going live, although people seem to now be cruising at either 60mph (typically in a 50mph zone) or some people simply don't understand what "average" means, and brake when they see the cameras and then speed up.
The annoying bit is the Westway flyover. Why this 3 lane road with no exits, pavements, etc is 40mph, who knows (other than it being a response to the same engineering problems which have beset Hammersmith flyover....). It used to be a regular 90-100mph ride...
Some of these f.wits will give themselves a totting up ban prior to receiving the first (of many) NIP....
PS the first Vector camera in the series is hidden behind the gantry immediately as you get on the flyover from the end of the Marylebone road. It's hard to spot, but you can definitely see the "arrow" marks on the road.
