Not sure if this is the right place for this, please move it if it isn't.

Followed a Jag today with a numberplate starting BV65. Should it not have trade plates and the plate obscured? What if it trips a speed camera etc? Would it even be registered yet? Sorry if these are daft questions, I realise new cars need to be got to their dealers by 1st Sept but was curious.

Could have been a customised number plate.

No, the plate was completely standard and it was clearly a brand-new car, still had the plastic seat covers and a plastic seal-type thing on the boot.

When I worked at a dealer,I was told that if a new car was seen on a new reg before the "release date" the reg

could be removed and the car returned to a 15 plate in your case.

This was in 1983 when the A plates started and whether the above has ever happened I have no idea.

Go on, feel free to explain what could have been butchered to get B (digit) 65 xxx to BV65xxx

You've only got ten choices.

How did you see the "plastic seat covers"?

I'm struggling with this really. It's a handful of days before the new 65 reg kicks in. There are literally thousands of cars being delivered to dealerships all over the UK, and you see one, then question it on PH?

The rear trade plate was lying on the rear shelf.

Over twenty years in the trade and never heard that.

Saw the seat covers because it pulled into a lay-by in front of me and I took a slow cruise past because I was intrigued. The query was because in all my years of interest in cars I'm pretty sure I've never seen a new registration plate early (bar ones on transporters and in dealerships of course), and simply wondered if it was actually "legit" so to speak.

Go and have a look around any main dealers compound. There'll be loads of cars with the next registration plates on them a few days ago in advance.

They all need to be pdi'd, fuelled and cleaned ready for people to pick them up on 1st September.

The car can't possibly be taxed yet so should have had trade plates front and rear. May have been on the dash and rear shelf, not correct but it happens, especially on short movements or PDI road tests.

We never obscure the number plate when running on trade plates and I have never heard any such story about the plate being withdrawn - the only person that could hurt is the innocent purchaser who hasn't received his new car yet.

Fair enough, I didn't see trade plates but they could well have been there. Just piqued my interest.

...aren't you supposed to though? I've seen a couple of comments in forums about the Police cracking down on incorrect trade plate use - both positioning and the type of journey the car is on.

Having said that, took a car for test drive the other day and the salesman just hung the rear plate over the rear wiper and put the front one on the dash.

Years ago (1998 S Reg) I drove a car about 40 miles home a few days before Aug (as it was then) 1st with no issues. I was quite surprised that my insurance company cheerfully covered the car.

I parked it out of the way at the side of our garage and as I opened the door past its first stop it sort of sprung away from me and into the corner of the garage wall. rolleyes Wifey (it was her car) wasn't very happy.

I saw 4 UDrive T5s in convoy on 65 plates, so I asked at work (work for VW) and you can legally drive them on trade plates!

Should be on trade plates yes as technically its not register or taxed at this stage. When I was in the trade I wouldn't drive a new untaxed car without them.

Not uncommon for dealers and some hire firms seen thrifty do it a lot as their head office is Exeter not far from me.

Maybe it pulled into the lay-by to reattach it's trade plate to the rear window?

Was talking about this today with another petrolhead and he pointed out - which I had no idea about - that where I saw the car is only about half a mile from Jaguar Land Rover's Warranties centre, so I'm guessing it was something to do with that.

I'm surprised you didn't notice it, it must be an absolutely massive facility.

I saw my first 65 plate a week or so ago - a new bus presumably on its delivery trip from Alexanders in Falkirk to whatever operator had bought it. The trade plates were stuck in the rear window, given the lack of possible hangers on the back (presumably to stop idiots hanging on while its in service), I don't see any other sensible way to do it.
