It just occurred to me last week that my tax must be due, so I dug through guy the pile of bills that arriv d while we were on holiday and there was the reminder. I always used to be aware of the date on the tax disc. Given we pay tax online now, I'd prefer it if the DvLA sent the reindeers by email and/or text.
I would love to see my postman trying to post a reindeer through my letterbox.

Even Father Christmas avoids dragging them down the chimney.

I'm not making excuses for her and don't expect any sympathy.
In my world this would be 100% my fault.

The only woman I'd trust with this sort of thing is my younger daughter. Wife and older daughter would never dream of paying a bill. The older daughter picks up letters on her way out and then just leaves them, unopened, in the car.

I was driving my car for about 6 weeks without an mot before realising one year.

I've since put a black board up in the garage, and make a note of when tax/ mot / ins is due, as well as key service stuff like oil/ filters/ fluid.

It helps me keep track, though down to just two vehicles at the moment so is a bit easier.

I pay both my cars by DD....one is an annual DD because it's not very much money, the other is an older car so the amount is larger and I do that by a DD twice a year.

Don't want it going out monthly, it's a pain and they charge more to do it that way, whereas the annual / half yearly ones they don't. At least I think that's how it works.
You have more faith in the DVLA than I do. There is no way I am letting that shower have direct and unfettered access to my bank account!
A yearly trip to the Post Office for each of my cars is no big deal or I can use a debit card. Either way control remains in my hands.

While you've still got a tax disc holder stuck to your screen ;-), pop over to DonBarrow.co.uk and print out one of his free MoT/Tax/Insurance discs. Or even design your own !

I got my car MOT'd in July...when I looked on the test certificate I noticed it actually ran out in January. Woops!

Or do something really radical in the digital age and put a reminder in your phone, or just use the reminder that comes through the door just like it's always done.

Anyone who paid 12 months road tax before last autumn (was it October or November?) would still be covered by their last paper disk, so not paying by monthly direct debit. I just got my renewal reminder through for the end of this month for my Audi. I have remembered to renew, but could easily have forgotten as my daughter has been driving the car and it is not around to remind me.

The thing I don't yet know is if people on monthly direct debit (as I am for other cars) will get a reminder at the 12 months point, or if it will just continue on being taken direct debit ad infinitum? That would be so much easier.....just a letter or email telling me what the new monthly debit will be, as required by the direct debit rules. Anyone know?

Yeah - they might whack up the road tax renewal and hope you don't notice like those scamming insurance companies. wink

You choose whether you want rolling renewal or not.

I just renewed by monthly direct debit, and it didn't ask me to tick a box regarding that question, it just told me what the next 12 payments were to be. Did I miss it somewhere? I was watching for it...

A few years ago now, my mum forgot, for getting on for three months. Luckily I spotted it, and she managed to pay for the missing months and never got a court letter.

These days though the DVLC computer systems seen to be a bit more switched on to charging folk.

The MOT is a different story (or was).
My ex-wife's MOT on her Yaris renewed in September each year.
In 2011 she was ill and forgot to renew it......completely.
She died in May 2012.
I loaned the car to a friend who had just had his car written off in a crash at the end of June, and found that I couldn't locate the MOT.
Tax was due within a week, so I told him that I would deal with that, as it would prove the car was MOT'd.
Went to renew the tax online to prove it had one.......no valid MOT.

SO 10 months without an MOT.

Has the system changed now that everything appears to be online?

How does an MOT "renew"? You have to go and get one done.

Indy garage sends me a reminder text at MOT time. The DVwhatever will do too if you cross their palms with silver.

Note to all... this helped me.

Set up a google email account.

Use the calendar to set you annual reminder 14/10/7/5 days in advance, the same for MOT and insurance.

I've let it slip by a few days. Seen the reminder, put it into my ever increasing to do pile....

Suddenly realised a couple of days into the month and sorted it. It's semi-easily done, especially with no discs anymore.

I just don't understand that argument. The reminder is / was the key trigger for me, not the disc in the front window. Do people really pay attention to that over everything else?

I think the 6 monthly payment is the most expensive version, followed by monthly, then annual is cheapest.

I think it depends on whether you deal with it straight away. What typically happens in my house is it arrives (I work from home) I see it and put it in a pile to deal with at the weekend. In the meantime some helpful soul will tidy my pile, and it's gone.

I'm now trying to remember work stuff, personal stuff, and it's easy to get waylaid. So much easier in the window....
