There isn't?

Both are a legal requirement are they not?

Or do you often choose which laws to comply to?
You probably do this quite frequently, unless you'd like us to believe you never broken a law in your life?

Council tax is levied on a direct apportionment I believe if you move part way through the fiscal year. Therefore, no double charging as with road tax.
It may well be directly apportioned, but I pay a huge amount to schools, fire, police, ambulance, libraries and so on that I haven't used either in years or ever. Now there's theft.

In fact look at insurance. bds making you pay for something that you might never need.

Who be she? I wasn't aware that I was funding her activities. Whatever they may be... eek

She was a Stock Aitken and Waterman pop songstress in the 80s. I really need to start checking the autocorrects that iPhone so loves.

A little bit naughty, but SORN it for the day that you bought it, then tax it the next day (1st of the month)

It'll show up as taxed when you drive home as, already mentioned, it takes a few days to update on the computers.

Then it will be taxed properly for the following month.
I was advised not to do something similar by the DVLA themselves.
The trouble is the SORN takes a while to pass through the system.
By the time the SORN comes through you'll find that your new tax is cancelled and you'll receive a refund.
The advise was to just leave it off-road and untaxed.

There is no double charging in the same exact circumstances, but unlike road tax, you can't sorn a property quite the opposite, unoccupied properties can be charged 150% after 2 year. Many councils don't even allow a short exemption period for an unoccupied property, When i moved into my new house i had to pay nearly 3 weeks council tax on a house i no longer lived in, i probably should have climbed a crane or gone on hunger strike in protest, it was a lot more than a months road tax.

I collected a car on Friday and am in a similar conundrum, albeit for 4 days instead of 1. The car is bought from a private seller and is taxed until november so he'll get 2 full months back. I'm tempted to wait until wednesday and tax it from then, am I feeling lucky? laugh

DVLA: "Well, do ya punk?"

shoot

If you have it insured then they will likely fine you for having an insured non taxed vehicle once the V5 is processed.

This whole process is deliberately designed to collect double tax for month of sale and fine those that seek to avoid it.

I'm now in two minds whether to pay up or wait; £40 fine if caught with no tax compared to £42 for a months tax - unless I'm missing something?

I'm usually very risk-averse (much to the disappointment of some on here...) but even I can see the odds are quite favourable.

My main concern is if the seller completes the transfer of ownership via the DVLA website as soon as I leave (instead of posting the V5C) as I've got to run the gauntlet of all the cameras on the M25. In my mind the DVLA website will update everything in real time and the 1st ANPR camera I drive past will have a fine on my doormat the following morning!

As has already been pointed out there is a much higher tax to get annoyed about. It's called Council Tax. Have a look at how that works then get annoyed.
Sorry, I didn't realise there's a hierarchy. I'm afraid you're not allowed to get annoyed by council tax until war and famine are ended and I think we have a fair way to go on those.

A bee in your bonnet about council tax, why not do something about it instead of moaning, or is it trolling, on here

I couldn't care less about Council Tax, I just thought it was funny how wound up posters get about something which is totally irrelevant, when there are many other things that probably cost them a lot more.

Anyway, I'm off to enjoy Biker Banter and the new trolls on there. This place has got tedious with all the wibblist crap and straw man arguments being posted.

Get the seller to write a receipt for the correct date but date the logbook as the 1st of the month.

Problem solved.

You couldn't care less about council tax but keep bringing it up, just to troll the thread. Brilliant.

Isn't it pointless to constantly use the "there are many other things....." argument.
Maybe there are, but you keep posting in this one. If you're not interested, or think it's beneath you why not go somewhere else. You clearly think it's not important yet keep posting your own straw man arguments here.

And anyone who posts something critical of your posts is getting wound up. No they're not, they're just bored of your posts.

It doesn't work like that - it's purely an admin thing. They don't care whether you're using the car or not, if it's not taxed or SORNed you should automatically get a penalty.

As an example one of my cars went in p/x ten days ago (Sat 19th) the V5 was posted off to DVLA first class the next day (mon 21st) and its still listed on the DVLA vehicle check site as being taxed, it takes 1-2 two weeks for them to process the paperwork before the previous owner will get his check and the car will be listed as sorn (or new tax).

Why would the seller do that, it may land them liable for an additional months road tax?
