As an example one of my cars went in p/x ten days ago (Sat 19th) the V5 was posted off to DVLA first class the next day (mon 21st) and its still listed on the DVLA vehicle check site as being taxed, it takes 1-2 two weeks for them to process the paperwork before the previous owner will get his check and the car will be listed as sorn (or new tax).
Increasingly people will do it online. I transferred a car to a family member a few weeks ago using the online system on Saturday 5th. He re-taxed it online on the 5th. Refund cheque (still haven't banked it) is dated 7th.

It used to be that they didn't do anything until there was a gap of a month in the vehicle's tax but I'd be amazed if they don't look closely at any now where there isn't double tax in the changeover month. Why would they pass up the opportunity to levy loads of penalty charges?

I collected a car on Friday and am in a similar conundrum, albeit for 4 days instead of 1. The car is bought from a private seller and is taxed until november so he'll get 2 full months back. I'm tempted to wait until wednesday and tax it from then, am I feeling lucky? laugh
I've risk it previously for a similar amount of time with no repercussions.

For some reason, when I came to tax the car the number on my new keepers slip wouldn't work online, so I was forced to phone. I was asked why I hadn't taxed the car, but I just said I hadn't used the car on the road yet. I was reminded I should of sorned the car if this was the case, but that it wasn't an issue.

My main concern is if the seller completes the transfer of ownership via the DVLA website as soon as I leave (instead of posting the V5C) as I've got to run the gauntlet of all the cameras on the M25. In my mind the DVLA website will update everything in real time and the 1st ANPR camera I drive past will have a fine on my doormat the following morning!
Honestly I wouldn't worry. From the same story as above I had to drive through the Dartford Crossing and forgot to pay the fee for crossing in time. I was fined for the crossing but never got caught out for not taxing the car when I should have.

Collected the car yesterday afternoon and taxed it 1st thing this morning - will see what happens!

A potential get out of jail free card is that when I collected it I drove straight to a booked MOT appointment, then drove it straight from there and parked it on the drive until today. The DVLA website says:

You can only drive an untaxed vehicle on a public road if you’re driving it to or from a licensed station for a pre-arranged MOT, vehicle identity check, or weight or emissions test.

I've always assumed this only applies to vehicles that have been off the road and the previous MOT has expired. However, it doesn't say this doesn't apply to vehicles that have a valid MOT and you're on the way to renew it.

Potential win, or am I setting myself up for a fall when the fine arrives and I try and explain this logic to the DVLA?

I would guess you'll be OK as yesterday was the last day of the month and it's hard to imagine DVLA accounts for hours - indeed they wouldn't even know unless the previous keeper did the sale notification online.

If it was needed, that wouldn't work as an excuse as the car has to be taxed or SORN'd.

Yep, exactly the same has happened, problem is I wanna do it monthly and they wont do monthly over the bloody phone. I suspect a fine will be on it's way to me now with the new V5. laugh

Anyone know how much it is?
