A genuine question, what are the rules or aren't there any? Just saw a policeman on the TV with a tattoo on the back of his head and on both sides of his neck, both arms were also covered. I always thought any tattoos would have to be hidden by sleeves, not sure why but it really doesn't look very professional, he appeared to be a body builder as well so more intimidating than anything.

Varies force to force apparently. There was a recently a story in the local rag about a young lad who had been refused entry into the local force as a special because he had a tattoo up his back, just poking out the top of his shirt.

Maybe one day, there'll be some way for business and other organisations to make information publicly available, and a simple way to search that kind of information from the comfort of your own home...

You should not have tattoos which could cause offence. Tattoos are not acceptable if they are particularly prominent, garish, offensive or undermine the dignity and authority of your role. Contact your chosen force if you have any particular concerns.

I know many good coppers with tattoos. I don't see how some ink on someones skin can affect the way they work.

As long as it isn't a big 'F*CK' then who cares?

You're a dick, not like I was asking if anyone knew where I could buy a telly from is it? Most questions on this forum could probably be answered with Google, what's the point of having a forum if it's not for discussion?

I wonder if the rules were brought in after more started getting tattoos? Human rights to express yourself and all that. Seems a bit of a shame though, I would certainly think a giant, muscle bound, tattooed officer would intimidate a little old lady. As long as they do the job properly it doesn't really matter.

Police officers are supposed to be representative of the communities they police, but personally I think it looks awful. It's a sad indication of how much standards have slipped.

Oh, sorry. I thought you wanted to ask "a genuine question" because you genuinely wanted to know the answer.

How have standards slipped?! Just because someone has a tattoo? Grow up.

Does it really matter what someone looks like as to how well they can do the job?

I work with some fantastic officers, some have tattoos, some don't.

Fair enough, I'm sure this site hasn't always been like this, it seems every time someone asks a question some smart arse tries to start an argument, why bother replying at all, surely you have something better to do?!

Not a fan of tattoo's generally. Certainly shouldn't be acceptable in a public facing job in my opinion.

What's next? one of those ridiculous ear tunnel things a pierced nose and some skinny jeans?

What's wrong with that? Do you judge someone based on their appearance?

Oh i know, its utterly shocking that someone who looks different might want a job where they are seen. I heard they even let some of thise dark skinned people and people on those ghastly wheeled chairs be seen in public too. What is the world coming to? The mail was right...

I would've thought that the only thing people would care about would be whether the officer can competently investigate their crime and do everything they can to bring an offender to justice. Surely that's all that matters? You can send a full bodied tattood highly competent officer to my door any day of the week over a "neat" useless one.

I didn't realise we could now discriminate in the workplace on the grounds of appearance. I might update the vacancy i have for a cctv engineer to say blonde with big tits preferred.

When you meet someone, you have no idea how well they can do the job. The way they look, talk and act are how you decide initially if you trust them.

For many people, tattoos are indicative of poor judgement. Permanently visible tattoos, on the hands, neck or face, especially so. It's an opinion they are fully entitled to hold.

To me that's no different to assuming that all young black people with hoodies carry knifes.
It's judgemental which is the issue here.
Open your mind and hearts etc.

Some of the nicest people I know are covered in tattoos.
