Hi,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I had an incident a few weeks ago which has divided opinion of my friends, family and co-workers so I thought I'd share it here.

I was driving with the wife and had the 18 month old in the back too. On the road someone pulls out from a junction in front of me, I had to lift off but not brake, not a big deal I thought. Then someone follows him out the junction causing me "slam the anchors on" narrowly avoiding a collision.

So to express my feeling I flashed my lights and made (what I considered to be appropriate) hand gesture, letting him know just what I thought of him. He then proceed to pull off the road (immediately) and try to get out and have a fight about it. (by the time he started to open his door I was off).

This got me thinking about when (if at all) I could have essentially used my car as a weapon to defeat said foe? (by defeat I basically mean run him over to get away)
What if he got out before I got away? and started charging back up the road towards my car! What if he got out with a weapon (large spanner or something)? What if he blocked me in? (I would have hit him but would the fuzz have thrown the book at me?)

I understand there are a lot of what if's and buts regarding these type of situations but I appreciate you time in reading this and responding

Thanks

P.S. I'm 6'2", 17 stone and did kung fu (hard core kung fu!) for 4 years so "toe to toe" I feel I could have taken him but that's not the point, I don't what to fight... I'm happy with just running away... but is it ok to run away in a car if that car has to drive over the top of the "bad guy" to get away?

That is quite the first post, welcome to PH.

Why didn't you step out of the car and discuss it with him ? Given you are so powerfully built ?

I know you don't want to hear it, but provoking an argument by giving the coffee beans and flashing headlights is just counter productive.

want to run him over..... well for a start take the keys off of you - as you are not fit to be in charge of any vehicle.

This day and age we all have a social responsibility - yes that cretin that pulled out took a liberty - thats the state of roads today - if you want to start a fight or engage in a fight then so be it....

Id be considering anger management courses - ;-)

Yes, stepping out of a car is punishable by death.

It's believed the Incas died out when someone got of a llama, sparking a diplomatic incident which led to the downfall of their civilisation.

A collision with him when your intention is to get away is different from deliberately running him over. The latter will require a greater threat and greater justification given the likely injury outcomes.

A lot also depends on how you felt and what threat you perceived, but any force needs to be reasonable in the circumstances.

Yes yes - but do you have a goatee and a directorship?

You did the right thing - no good ever comes of having a fight with someone in the street.

I could do with some clarity around when it's OK for me to glass someone in a pub.

On Saturday someone nearly bumped into me in the queue at the bar and nearly spilled my pint. I called him a wker and the he got all upset.

I was quite worried when he got upset so decided to glass him just before running away.

Is that OK?

We only have the op's view that the other person wanted a fight. He may have wanted to apologise.

Sadly, we will never know...

In all likelihood I'd say Article 75 with a stat dec.

Have you considered cage fighting?
It would be a shame to stifle these urges especially given your skills
in the combat arena.

[Chorus:]
Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting
Those kicks were fast as lightning
In fact, it was a little bit frightening
But they fought with expert timing

There was funky China men from funky Chinatown
They were chopping them up
They were chopping them down
It's an ancient Chinese art
And everybody knew their part
From a fainting, to a slip
And a kickin' from the hip
Everybody was Kung Fu fighting
Those kids were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit fright'ning
But they fought with expert timing

There was funky Turbo Balls and little Sammy Chong
He said, here comes the big boss, let's get it on
We took the bow and made a stand
Started swaying with the hand
A sudden motion made me skip
Now we're into a brand new trip

Everybody was Kung Fu fighting
Those kids were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit fright'ning
But they did it with expert timing

Oh-hoh-hoh-hoh, ha
Oh-hoh-hoh-hoh, ha
Oh-hoh-hoh-hoh-ha
Keep on, keep on, keep on
Sure enough
Everybody was Kung Fu fighting
Those kids were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit fright'ning
Make sure you have expert timing
Kung Fu fighting, had to be fast as lightning...

Forget the Kung Fu bit. You did the right thing. You drove away to avoid confrontation. Well done.
