Define a fortune, a standard tractor unit in accountant white with no extras is probably less than a range rover fitted out to traffic plod spec.
In a recent trucking publication they had a side by side test of 2 fleet spec trucks. Mercedes Benz Actros was around £117,000 and Volvo FM was £109,000

Upgrade to an Actros Megaspace or a Globetrotter XL and you're £130,000+ Scania R730? £150,000+
They ain't going to be using Megaspaces or Globetrotters, they will be using low powered DAF CFs or basic fleet spec Scania models which as someone has said can be bought for around £60,000,although most will be loaners from the manufacturers.

its interesting what you can see from a nice HGV cab.
Amazing how many drivers with high end cars and vans cant grasp
linking the phone to the onboard Bluetooth system.

Saw bloke on the M25 with a full takeaway dinner in his lap chomping away
as he past me slowly.
Did not stay on his lap for long when he spotted the truck wheel nuts getting close to his door.

That CMP Officer in the tractor unit was PC Nairn if my memory is correct smile

It's definitely a DAF that Highways England have leased for Police use. Some other forces have individual arrangments. I think CMPG have a Scania sometimes for example. The Met have access to their own cab too.

I think you'll find pretty much all police forces use trucks these days, while they no doubt probably own one or two (or lease them) I think most are borrowed/hired from whatever friendly truck dealer is approached, to turn the speed limiter off involves nothing more than plugging a computer in it for a few seconds, once the force have finished with it its returned to the dealer, limiter reset and either gets put on sale or hire.

Tis indeed.

Van driver with a copy of the Sun spread across the steering wheel, flicking over the pages as he weaved through the M1 roadworks at Daventry.

Woman leaning into the back to take pictures of her toddler with her phone on the M5 Gloucester. Came within 6 inches of spearing off down the embankment before applying corrective lock and spearing wildly into the middle lane.

Chap with his laptop perched on the steering wheel, merrily typing up his sales reports in the outside lane of the M1 roadworks at Worksop, 10ft from the car infront and 1ft from the concrete divider.......for 10 miles.

Whats really worrying is the number of 18-30 yr old women who if they're not actually on the phone, have it on their lap or hold it like a comfort blanket. It's just an epidemic.

God knows how many times I've blasted the horn as they're about to to get a 10ton axle through their A-pillar because they can't hold it between the lines.

This is the Met's, though I've only ever seen it at road safety events

Saw it outside Hammersmith station a few weeks ago, again a photo shoot with cyclists/for cycle safety (I'm guessing)

They should put on show the mangled wrecked cycles that some of the more stupid cyclists
have ended up with after passing under an artic that's turning left.
An some of the scene photos too.

In order to glory in the needless deaths of people whose most serious crime was to be on the road at the same time as a lorry?

You, my friend, are an horrific human being who needs to take a good long look in the mirror.

I wouldn't ever show the scene photographs as they will be horrendous, but he is less of a 'horrific human being' than you are a foolish man.

You need to take a good long hard look in an HGV mirror. The cyclists have not committed a crime, but neither have HGV drivers in many instances, if not the majority. Cyclists need stop recklessly and stupidly putting themselves in danger and take responsibility for their actions.

I guarantee you that after a ten minute drive in an HGV through ANY city, your blinkered and ignorant view about fault and responsibility would be changed for life.

Anything that forces cyclists to reconsider and start understanding and looking out for themselves would be worthwhile.

In fact, seeing that accident photos are used in many HGV training courses (EPIC for one), perhaps some carefully chosen pictures would help in educating the naïve? They have certainly affected me sufficiently for me to always challenge fools like you.

Well for your information I have not had any issues with cyclists, except in the last year or so when the heads down arse up brigade become the victim of their own stupidity.
I have driven a wide selection of heavy equipment & trucks and held full Goods Vehicle license for 36 years and without so much as a warning or a mark on it.
My only coming together with a two wheeled lout was on the A13 last year when he was mouthing off and decided to punch my drivers door. needless to say the opening of the door very quickly had the desired effect.

Like the last poster who said those type of photographs are very good at education for both drivers and two wheeled dimwits both pedal and powered.
In a nutshell cyclists and motorcyclists (And yes I ride both) need to be a little more aware and accountable for their actions.
Perhaps it's you who needs to take a good look in the mirror, try not to crack it.

Total victim blaming horsest from the both of you - yes, visibility from lorries is inadequate, that's why their drivers kill people roughly once a month in London.

It's only one type of vehicle in these incidents - and your "they go up the inside, we had no choice but to kill them" victim blaming of the cyclist totally fails to account for the lorry approaching from the rear and either driving over the cyclist or left hooking them.

Hopefully the HGV ban at rush hour will be instituted shortly, which should help matters.

Ultimately it will likely be the total removal of the human element that stops these deaths, with a robot driver able to actually see where it's going.

Well said he's one of those "Teflon Cyclists" nothing sticks, I wonder how many times he has had run in's with drivers, gone though red lights and over crossings when people are walking across.
He is just the sort of moron that blames everyone else for his failures.
No doubt has a camera on his helmet which would serve better shoved up his lycra clad back side.

I would also add that a compulsory cyclist compliance test should be introduced along with full rider safety equipment, hi visibility vest and the full enforcement of the police for those that don't conform.
As for banning HGV's in rush hour would you like that extended to busses and coaches ?
The vast majority of cyclists, moped and bike riders are on the whole sensible this tt must be in the other 10%
