Kent have apparently been using one , Central Motorways lot use one .
I would imagine that these vehicles are loaned to the police as they cost a fortune to buy.
Have the speed limiters been re-set?
Any other areas using them ?

I'd imagine they are loaned. iirc they are used by police so that they can see into truck cabs to catch truckers using hand held phones/watching a dvd/eating/drinking/knocking one out etc. as its difficult to see into the cabs from a regular patrol car.

I imagine they will be limited to 60mph, the UK maximum speed for an HGV on the motorway. Most trucks are limited to 56mph because the continental speed limit for HGV's is 80km/h, some are limited to less for fuel economy reasons.

Pretty sure I saw an episode of one of those traffic cops type shows where they used an unmarked truck and demonstrated that it wasn't speed limited by taking it up to 80MPH or something.

With the Scottish cop? I remember that episode; seems speed isn't the top of the list, especially when your targets are in similar tractors but towing at least an empty trailer of a few tons, if not fully laden.

GMP have one as well. They were on the local news a few weeks ago with some of the footage - drivers watching DVDs, chatting on the phone, reading books etc.

Great idea if you ask me.

one like this, with no limiter and designed to deal with middle lane morons

If the article photos were correct kent used a 65 plate white DAF unit with NPCC on the front and Blue lights hidden in the front grill .
They used it for a week on the M20 and nicked 57 truckers .
All the regular offences inc phones, lack of control ,lanes etc.
Given the number of trucks on this road over a 1 week period its not that high a number is it .

I'd say it is quite a high number given it's only one police patrol unit doing it.

I'm not surprised they nicked a few truckers. With the speed limiters driving along in convooi it still amazes me truckers keep awake. There is a shortage of lorry drivers don't surprise me watching paint dry is more exciting.

Ice road truckers now that is a job.

With the crazy amount of paperwork they seem to need to do, I doubt they could beat that by much if they tried.

The trucks are only used for spotting and filming , they don't actually stop anybody , that is done by following marked units .

Define a fortune, a standard tractor unit in accountant white with no extras is probably less than a range rover fitted out to traffic plod spec.

The one used on the motorways is owned by the Highways England and moved around forces as and when they want to run a campaign. IIRC a PH er was involved in the project to procure it and the associated benefits.

It's leased for two years and the Police can book it as required. The biggest surprise has been how effective it has been at allowing the Police to evidence social media use by car drivers. Makes it very easy to spot the phone in lap whilst Facebooking folks.

Video of them in action here http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kent/news/police-patro...

I'm all for this, so many vehicles get away driving dangerously with impunity whilst only those who speed (mostly safely) are punished.

Anyone who gets caught by these really do deserve something for not paying attention. For a start it's always running solo so it stands out like a sore thumb in your mirror, how often do you see a unit without a trailer? Then their style of driving is to sit in the middle lane and drive flat out between each HGV so you look in your mirror and it's half a mile way, the next time you look it's a couple hundred meters away and gaining with a 10+mph speed difference when you're sitting on the speed limiter.

In a recent trucking publication they had a side by side test of 2 fleet spec trucks. Mercedes Benz Actros was around £117,000 and Volvo FM was £109,000

Upgrade to an Actros Megaspace or a Globetrotter XL and you're £130,000+ Scania R730? £150,000+

I would imagine the bean counters would shudder at £100k plus for each unit .Add in trianing and it makes sense to share equipment across several forces.

The problem with 38 tonnes of truck driven at 56 mph by someone who is watching a video/calling the wife/reading a book is obvious.

DAF XF's are circa £60k last time I asked but our place buy a lot of them so may be heavily discounted though.
