The increased engine noise is supposed to give a greater "impression of speed" than a higher gear.

Back in the days of 5-speed boxes some driving instructors used to say,

1st - for 10 mph
2nd - for 20 mph
3rd - for 30 mph
4th - for 40 mph
5th - for 50 mph
They still did when I was learning in 2007. The problem was that many of my peers took this as gospel.

Interesting. I've often wondered what's the lowest speed they nick people. I guess 79 "actual" is probably over 80 on the speedo.

Most of the course was aimed at going too fast in a 30/40 zone.
That's where most of the deaths and injuries happen.

They still do. Cue having to explain to the sister to leave her car in gear longer so she can get up to speed on a motorway slip road. She was genuinely surprised how much "faster" her little Yaris was when I used the full rev range biggrin

Fourth would be better for mpg, but you need to be doing 35 then really.

It's also the engine braking in 3rd that's part of the theory - probably another thing the average idiot wouldn't notice.

Anyone had any agro/comments from the folk giving the course about the type of car you turned up in - I'm thinking Porsche etc?

When I was 17, my squeeze of the time was taught the same thing. All well and good until after passing her test I had her drive up a steep hill (out of Amersham for those that know it). Only for her to stall the car. Oh what fun that was - steepest hill start she's ever done - surprised the clutch was man enough rofl

I turned up on a Fireblade - I think they quite warmed to me when I explained it would do 110 in 2nd! whistle

I did one not too long ago. Having read a few things about them online I was pleasantly surprised with it to be fair. The instructor wasn't patronising and was happy to have a joke with people and the content wasn't as bad as I expected either.

As mentioned above, what was shocking was the lack of knowledge from a lot of the attendees. I think less than half the room correctly identified a 30mph speed limit for an example dual carriageway and quite a few didnt even know what a dual carriageway was at all!

A bit ironic that a lot of speeders are surprised at the lack of knowledge of the others sitting the same speed awareness course! Must all be driving gods smile

What happens to this rule if you happen to be driving an electric or hybrid?

I'm going on a course on Tuesday....

My crime.... 72mph on the M25 (in a 60 admittedly).

Variable speed limit was all over the place that day. Up down, up down

For your average couldn't-care-less driver it's not a bad rule - half the people on the course when I did mine said how easy that would be to remember!

I quite enjoyed my course, other than the dreadful directions/parking for the centre which ended up with me being about 30s early having spent 20 mins trying to find the car park from an indecypherably tiny map.

Surprised you were offered the course for doing 37 in a 30, thought the cutoff was 34?? Grab opportunity with both hands!
My Ex got offered a course for doing 42 in a 30. Told her she was bloody lucky.

Depends on your prosecuting force I think. East Lancs who caught me were Limit+10%+8mph to allow you on the course.

Do you need to tell your insurer about going on the course? Not applied for insurance recently but do they now ask as well as any accidents or motoring offences whether you've been on a speed awareness course? This article seems to think so but thought the course was instead of points.

You're all pathetic.

Has anyone ever actually been caught speeding properly

36 in a 30
37 in a 30
46 in a 40
79 in a 70
And so on

I've been caught speeding several times, all of them I'm pleased to say we're for 90+ on a motorway, except one which was for 40 something in a 30.

Hardly...

Everyone on the course was caught speeding yes (though I'm sure you've never exceeded the speed limit), but its shocking when people can't tell the difference between a 30mph and 70mph limit road, or even identify what a dual carriageway is.

I went on a course recently, I hated it & nearly walked out at the point I realised they would be trying to make us interact with other people & the instructors themselves. I don't enjoy interacting, so I didn't. They divided us all into groups of 4 to interact, I didn't, so there was some groups of 4, 1 group of 3 & 1 group of 1, me. I hate interacting.

Also everything was in confidence so when the multiple choice questions were being answered there was no way of telling who knew what, so I could have selected the most ridiculous answers & no one would have been any the wiser.

For some reason some people wanted to tell a story, to get a point across. I didn't give a flying feck what their point was no more than they would have cared what mine was, but I neither had a point or a story & just wished these people would shut the hell up so we could all get away on time.

One fella got asked to leave for repeatedly falling asleep which was the highlight of the whole 4 hours.

I hated it & will never ever go on one again what ever the circumstances as long as I live.
