I'll keep it brief.

Bought a battery between 12-15 months ago from a car parts shop. I won't mention names but lets just call them 'EU car parts'. This morning my car wouldn't start so needed jump started. Tested the battery and one of the cells has packed up. Battery is a brand only this parts place sells, i'm led to believe they bought the name. So I took the battery down as it had a 3 Year Warranty. Guy at the desk dismisses me straight away because I have no receipt and i'm sure I paid cash. Checked through online statements and even tried the online order history the EU parts site which is empty even though i've spent hundreds with them over the last year.

Guy claims he can't replace without an invoice or receipt. My argument is that it is an own brand battery, it has a manufacture date on it of less than 2 years ago and also a specific code. Surely they are able to type my email, phone number into their system and it will bring up a list of all the items ordered as Halfrauds have done in the past and other builders merchants.

Don't like being fobbed off and for anyone suggesting 'get on with life' or 'buy another battery'. Why should I if it comes with a warranty.

Surely you will be able to do the same search via your own email.

It's up to the buyer to provide proof of purchase, not the seller to provide proof of sales.

If you've lost the receipt, I reckon you're f*cked.

Normally I'd agree with the replies but if the battery is provably less than two years old on a three year warranty and could only have been sold by one company, how is it not under warranty?

I guess they could say the warranty is only offered to the original buyer but that term would have to be evident upon purchase and clearly stated on their receipts......

From a more practical standpoint, asking loudly for the branch manager would probably have the desired effect anyway.

If they have a Facebook or Twitter account it might be worth 'mentioning' it on there. smile

Yes, that's definitely well enough disguised that nobody would ever be able to figure out who you're talking about, thereby going against the name'n'shame rule... FFS.

That's nice, dear. Doesn't mean you bought it from them - you could easily have bought it from a scrappy or used off eBay or with the car... Is the warranty transferable?

Great. So prove your purchase, and the warranty will be honoured.

I'm afraid the answer is above.

If a manufacturer offers a warranty with goods they sell, then repair/replacement under that warranty is subject to adhering to the rules of the warranty.

For example, that warranty may be not transferable to a second owner, and it may have rules such as registering the purchase, or, supplying proof of purchase.

Halfords have honoured a warranty even though you hadn't bothered to keep the receipt yet you call them Halfrauds?

This did happen to me at Halfords many years ago. I had the original battery packaging with date code and Halfords branding in it, but no receipt. The pig ignorant guy behind the counter refused my claim (which would have been annoying but understandable) but followed up by grabbing the box off me and flinging it into a bin I couldn't reach behind the counter. He then told me that the "lifetime" guarantee on the battery had expired because the battery had failed therefore it was the end of its life.

I boycotted Halfords for 5 years after that so they lost out more then if they had honoured the claim.

Often it's down to stupid "head office" policies that make it almost impossible for anyone in branches to to reconcile it on the till - there isn't a "common sense" button when selecting transaction type.

Pretty sure the law is "proof of purchase" vs. receipt - and if something was made 2 years ago that has a 3 year warranty and can only be got from one place, it's arguably proof of purchase just the same as a receipt for a cash purchase shows someone purchased it - still doesn't prove it's the original purchaser taking it back though.

You're in the murky grey area where someone just needs to show some common fking sense in the company concerned.

With Halfords depending on the battery you buy there is either a 3yr,4yr or 5 yr guarantee so I always keep the receipt by stapling it to a piece of A4 paper and put it with the cars service history file.

About 6 months ago my Bosch battery I bought at Halforgs did not seam to be as good as it once was and had to trickle charge it fairly often so looked at the receipt and it was 4 years 8 months old with a 5 year guarantee so I took it to Halfords, explained the situation and they checked the battery that their machine said that it was ok but just needed charging.

I told them that the battery had been on trickle charge all day the day before and I had driven to their place today so should be fully charged. He said if I drive up the motorway for a few miles and when I come back it the machine says the same he will replace it.It said the same so he replaced it.

The original Bosch battery cost 109.99 and now their direct replacement was a Yuassa battery that retails at 105.00 so he gave me the new battery plus £4.99 change and I changed the battery in their car park.

I dont really understand when people buy something over a certain value that has a guarantee why you would not keep the receipts.I have a folder with my E-mails for items I buy online and a file in my filing cabinet for the paper receipts, its not rocket science.
