The latest SPECS cameras look at the rear of vehicles. Those, too, have floodlights, so your theory about driver portrait is a bit shaky.

In most road works, floodlights are few, so I reckon there are a lot of dummies.
The lighting up the driver bit was a guess admittedly, the fact that there are floodlights on rear facing cameras occasionally supports the wider argument I was making much more than it disproves it. If the infrared on these cameras is so useful why do they need the floodlights on any cameras (that qu still is asked of th earlier poster).

The original situation I described was exactly the same through the M62 roadworks from Brighouse to Leeds

SPECS installations do not use floodlights. The cameras are only used for numberplate recognition which is what the IR lights are used for.

So why do so many of them have floodlights pointing into the road directly in front of them?
I know they use IR, but there are many of them with these floodlights.

Not knowing the stretch you're referring to, I'd say it's just coincidence, although I suppose it could be possible they are trying to supplement the IR lights for an obscure reason.

The SPECS zones I regularly pass through have no floodlights anywhere.

So what are they for, just randomly lighting up the road for no reason at all?

Had a longer think about it and edited my previous post...

It would be interesting to see some photos or in car video of the zones you're referring to. You've got me curious now.

I'll go for a drive up there this evening, the camera work might not be great though

That'll be interesting.

I also need to correct myself as the SPECS cameras do take an image of the car as well as reading the numberplate, but the cameras that have been in service for some time now have night capability with the IR lights, so I still don't see why they would need white light to work at night.

Try the M1 between Rugby and Northampton. Try the M1 from J29 northwards to Leeds. The first floodlights I saw were on the 4 lane widening of the M1 south from J28 several years ago.

They are not in front of all cameras, just a few. Which zones do you travel through?

Mainly the M3. So you're seeing floodlights immediately before or after a few SPECS cameras on the M1 stretches and no floodlights where there aren't any cameras?

Loony is correct. Freddy is wrong. Try looking at the manufacturers link posted in this thread - they describe the use of spot lights.

Some cameras with floodlights. More cameras without floodlights. No floodlights where there are no cameras, sorry for the ambiguity.

It follows that only cameras with floodlights are active at night.

From another forum..

"I emailed the Highways about this when they were doing the M1 near Luton back in 2007. As Nick says, it's for the cameras to be able to read your number plate when it's dark."

I had a drive up there, my phone camera is crap, my GoPro broke a while ago, so that's that plan scuppered. I think we're broadly in agreement around this now.

There was never any doubt...smile

I wonder if these floodlights pose a potential problem for those affected by epilepsy?
