My handbook lists winter tyres with a lower speed rating, so I am covered.

Audi have a list : https://www.audi.co.uk/owners-area/winter.html

In fact, since winter tyres are mandatory in some countries where cars are sold (!) I think you'll find that manufacturers actually provide a specification for winter tyres somewhere, if you look for it.
Good call

Indeed, most do. For example my Skoda Octavia Scout comes with 225/50/17 summer tyres. The official winter tyre is a 215/55/16. So smaller in width and circumference as well. Lower speed rating is also acceptable for winters on the Skoda.

I went down the all-season route and have just fitted Pirelli Cinturato all-seasons in 225/50/17. I cover about 20K miles a year so wanted some good/medium priced tyres. Often the cheaper brands can be better rated than more expensive tyres because they are re-branded premium manufacturer tyres

Good call, I hadn't thought to check the handbook or that the specs would be different for summer / winter tyres. I know they fit the tyres I was looking at as OEM in Canada on similar models so should be fine.

Cheers, JAmes

Well all this talk of winter tyres and seeing the snow come down yesterday means it's time for a trip to the garden shed to dig out the two sets of winters. Then a fun couple of hours, changing, checking, washing and putting away. Perhaps I should have a man to do this like some other hardcore petrolheads biggrin
