Does this sort of display not encourage vandalism from supporters of rival teams?I have just been reading about one town (though it IS in Scotland, which may explain it!) where anything green (even traffic light glass!) is attacked!

Standard boring response. It is a useful use of our time as they are illegal. Believe it or not, part of being a police officer means you deal with offences.... Including illegal number plates. Being part of the traffic department means we enforce traffic laws and probably more so than a regular police officer. If people stuck to the laws and regulations with number plates then maybe we could be doing something more constructive. You'd also be amazed at how many no insurance, no driving licence and drink drivers you get just from a stop to speak to someone about their number plate.

I actually feel reassured that Police do pull people for the littelist things. If i spend my time and money making sure my car is road legal then people who don't should be pulled. Exactly. If you are not pro active going out stopping people, you will never find the drink/drug drivers, wanted people or unearth more serious offences.
Mis spaced number plates are a particular problem at the moment and will always results in a £100 fixed penalty.
