I'm wondering if its legally acceptable to place a sticker of e.g. a football team badge on my rear plate. It wouldn't be blocking my reg at all and there would be plenty of space between the sticker and the first character of my reg. Or am I likely to be stopped by police? If so then anyone know if they just warn you or its a instant fine?

Cheers

It's not legal so make your own decision.

The likely result depends very much on if you're stopped for having an illegal plate or just for extremely poor taste.

It will depend very much on whether it's Rovers or City.

I honesty don't understand people's fascination with interfering with number plates

the law is strict but a little complex, as it relies on an engineering standard, which allows for certain amount of flexibility which allows for some little rebellions to still be within the law, but i still don't think it is a good idea, i spent my teens and early 20s regularly pulled over by the police for trivial things, and have learned not to hand it to them on a plate.
These days i make sure there is nothing about my car which makes it stick out in anyway, no external mods, not even a window sticker. And since i have taken this approach, last 7-8 years i have been pretty much able to get away with murder compared to what i used to.

I can't think of a single reason why you would ever want to. But no, it's probably not.

Why do you need to put it on the plate? You could put it anywhe else on the car and it would be perfectly legal.

or you could put it somewhere nowhere near your car, like on the back of your laptop, or in a bin.

But in all honesty i think it's all about being a little be rebellious, people never had any interest in putting stickers on the edge on thier number plate until it wasn't allowed.

As a general rule, plod need a reason to stop you.

Put a sticker on number plate equals that reason. Anything else wrong with the car or your documents and your fubbered. All due to a stupid sticker.

I don't know what's worse. Placing a sticker on a number plate or the fact that it's a football team sticker.

This should be in the council thread. smile

So rather than spend twelve quid on a pair of legal plates without the EU symbol, you'd rather have illegal plates AND look like a dick...?
