I recently bought a used car privately. Previous owner sent off the V5C with change of keeper details and a week after, I get a V5C for the vehicle. Followed by another one the day after. Both bearing different document numbers.

Before I battle through the DVLA phone system, should I just be using details from the most recent one? I need to put on a private reg.

Try to buy tax or declare it sorn, that should show you which number is the correct one, and which one has been superseded.

If you look in the bottom left corner of page 2 of the V5c you will see the line official use only - please do not write below this line

Just underneath this line there is a date (just to the right of the Doc. Ref. No.) this date is the date the V5c was issued or printed, chances are your 2 documents have differing dates and the most recent one will be the valid one.

Or you could just try both numbers when assigning the reg - only one will work.
