BBC said:
"Almost 99% of all vehicles on the road are correctly taxed: that's around £6bn in vehicle tax passed to the Treasury every year," said Oliver Morley, chief executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.
"We write to every registered vehicle keeper in the UK to remind them when their tax is due and we have introduced a range of measures to make vehicle tax easy to pay. At the same time we are taking action against those who are determined to break the law."
But RAC chief engineer David Bizley said: "These are very worrying and disappointing statistics indeed. Sadly, the concerns we raised about the number of car tax evaders going up at the time the tax disc was consigned to history have become a reality.
The loss in revenue for the government is "significant", he said, having risen from £35m in 2013 to an estimated £80m now "and, it has to be pointed out, far exceeds the forecast £10m efficiency saving".
So the change is not going well so far...

Non Direct Debit customers - V11 reminder will be issued via the post.

Direct Debit customers with an e-mail address - will receive e-mail notification of [automatic] Direct Debit renewal.

Direct Debit customers without an e-mail address - will receive a paper reminder advising the Direct Debit will continue unless they declare SORN or sale.

Apparently..

We set up one of our vehicles with a direct debit instruction and received a reminder by email a week or so ago for the one that runs out on 1st December

DVLA do nothing if you report a vehicle that's not taxed. There's been one near us that's never moved in 3 years, has no tax, MOT but apparently is insured. (An ancient VW caravanette). Parked part of the pavement with two flat tyres and bricks to stop the vehicle running down the slope.

Numerous reports to DVLA and to Police Scotland. But as the latter can't be bothered to turn up at road crashes where someone has died, then that explains why they're not interested.

I received an e-mail telling me my bike's tax direct debit will be continuing and I don't need to do anything.

Worked really well IMO - no more annual pilgrimage to the post office armed with gruby bits of paper. The only downside is the slight increase in price to pay monthly, but it's small beer in the grand scheme of things, and compared with paying 100% up front there is a infintesimal cash flow saving in there somewhere.

If anything, I would have thought enforcement action against untaxed vehicles would have increased with the online system...coupled with APRN checks.

I would expect an initial peak in un-taxed cars being recorded as numpties who have not kept themselves up to date with the change in law get caught out - a lesson I would expect most of them only have to make once.

But that was not the case for me - I have made an annual card payment for tax online for the last 4 years - This September was the first year without a disc and I did not get a reminder in the post (or email), so I missed the due date by a couple of weeks - I might have to put my own sticker in the car to remind me!
