Thanks for the info re the AGM CTek, I'll be ordering one. And for the record the car went flat after 10 days only.
And when it's not in use don't wrap the leads around it. That's how these things happen.

From headphones to hairdryers. Never wrap leads tightly.

I've a CTEK 10 and it was £90 at the time. Worth every penny apart from the ste bag it comes in.

Maybe that's where I'm going wrong, I usually wrap up the leads the same way that they come in the box , using those little black metal ties that they also come from the factory.

Lesson :

Dump Chinese one

Buy C Tek

Don't wrap up or coil leads, hang from wall.

We can close the thread now, move on, nothing to see !

Personally I'd be more concerned why the fuse in the plug didn't blow first - sounds like it was 'over-sized'.

Had you ever had to change the fuse?

If so, was it replaced with one of the same rating?

Interesting point that. I never changed or went near the fuse or plug. When the incident happened it was the end of the output wires near the unit that went wallop, so would the fuse blow or would it just burn out internaly? The only reason I ask is so as I know in future.

Whatever having a charger go bang and council have in common I don't know ! I'll open it up inside just to have a look, now where did I leave that lump hammer ?

^^ Yup,

I think the time for fun is now over and the OP understands the answers given to his question.

This is nowhere near as bad as the recent thread where the guy with the insanely loud exhaust that he wouldnt park outside his own house (because it was so noisy on startup) and hence parked it in a residential area two streets away - wanted justification/ideas for ignoring polite complaints from the other street.

Nowhere near as bad...

Every time you move the wire, it will tend to bend about one point where it suddenly goes from being stiff to flexible. i.e

Over time, it will either damage the wire, or chafe the insulation.

The answer is strain relief. Either a better, more gradual reduction in stiffness. Or something that prevents the end from bending at all.

I found a copy of the curiously titled "sluts with nuts" DVD tucked in our hedge the other day if the OP fancies a swap as per advert?

The fuse should be the weakest link in the chain. Too many people think - 13 amp plug so 13 amp fuse. I've always said that plugs sold seperately should not have a fuse fitted. Fuses do come in other ratings apart fron 13 amp starting at 1 amp. The fuse should be rated to the load of the appliance it's fitted to.
