Where on earth did anyone say abolishing IHT will cure waste?

The argument made was that you can't abolish IHT because they need to find the money. The point then is that if you reduce waste, you don't need the IHT revenue.. Simple?
Do you think any political party get into office and is pro waste? Do you think anyone thinks waste is a good idea?

Waste is a fact of life to some extent.

Even if it were possible to eliminate waste do you not think the savings would be better spent elsewhere rather than using it to give a tax break to people inheriting money?

Maybe even a much higher stamp duty on second homes.

That lot should fill the hole quite nicely.
So you're in favour of higher stamp duty on a 2nd home you buy (out of taxed income) but you're against IHT on a second home you inherit. silly
That comment from him was to try to get a bite from me about my existing properties. It didn't work
Ahh, OK, I wasn't aware of a hidden agenda / personal row! I just took it for a bloody stupid comment.

It's definitely the latter as well.

What strikes me is that it is abundantly clear that their argument centres around the "I don't like this tax because it affects me" mentality.

This^^^^, combined with "anyone who isn't staunchly anti IHT is jealous that they are too poor to be affected by it."

If all the pro IHT people are that way due to envy, then why aren't all the anti IHT people that way out of greed?

i don't think it's greed- as i have said before, this tax doesn't affect me-everything safe and sound in australia. I'm not a greedy person, I'm very generous actually

Is it?

Not everyone thinks that money is the be-all and end-all of life.

The tax does affect me, (or if will affect my kids if my wife and I die before we get a chance to retire and spunk the lot on cruises and fancy restaurants and stupid cars) but I am not against it. So that's not envy.

It won't affect me, neither my parents or my inlaws house will ever get close to the threshhold, but plenty of taxes do affect me. I don't object to them though, because I accept that the money has to come from somewhere.

Why so vocal then?

Also, what's your view of companies like Google, Starbucks and the like taking their profits offshore to avoid tax?

Google et al are resident companies receiving local revenue. If I move home when I retire and take my assets with me, what's the issue. Like google is it .

Shame so many chats here descend into utter posturing, squabbling and absolute b0llox. Rarely happens in the real world. Unsubscribed and so bored with unsubscribing.
