My wife's school's minibus has had one of its wheel arches ripped off and so now the rear wheel and tyre are sticking out from the body work by about two inches. Is it legal for them to continue to use the minibus until the arch is replaced? Thanks.

What is going on with the wheel itself? Is it me or does that welding look dodgy?

It's illegal.

its not legal as all of the wheel must be within the bodywork (or under a wheel arch cover aka caterham 7)

Its to stop people brushing along the side of a car and getting caught up on the wheels if the body work is there they are less likely to get pulled under the wheels. In the photo they have no chance.

In this case - Think of the children ! is probably justified. Talk to the school

How's the PTA budget this term? Might be worth trawling ebay if funds won't stretch to a new part.

Completely normal. It does have extra surface rust to give it some patina, but apart from that there's nothing out of the ordinary there.

I didn't mean the rust.

What does a new wheel cost? £40 for a steel one?

Standard Transit wheel. The unwelded bits aren't actually touching, you just can't see that from this angle.

No, it's just a typically manky Transit wheel.

To my untrained eyes that van looks like it's made from old tin cans. Are crafters any better? They look a lot more polished, same as the merc...shared chassis I think

Nope, crafters are junk. In the 5 years we have had ours and in 49000 miles, we've had 3 steering racks, 2 under warranty. Rust is worse than any transit of the same era. 2 rear calipers, dodgy wiring to the rear lights. We've just had some new bushes fitted in the front end too.

The clutch is awful, the gear change is awful. You can barely get any gears when the oil is cold. Been like this since new. "They are all like that sir" is what VW told us.

Every time it's been back to VW there has been at least one other crafter with the engine out.

If you want to load anything into the back you need to hope you are 8 feet tall as the back is too high to step up with anything heavy.

Utter junk.

Crafters are not junk but yours sounds like it might be. Sprinter and Crafter both use the same gearbox and it is a good unit, but suits the Merc 2.1 engine better than VWs 2.0.

The answer to the loading height was to specify the rear step as an option. That's around 44cm from the ground and only cost £108 or less 6 years ago. It's still only £110+VAT now (on the Sprinter anyway).
