Golf R leasers - best or worst choice ever? What next?
Discussion
Really enjoyed having mine for the past 16 months, but I'm struggling to decide what's next when I give it back in October.
M235i convertible and E400 Coupe have sparked a little interest, but nothing like the excitement when I was waiting for the Golf to arrive. Focus RS could be a possibility but I prefer to be a little more low key these days.
Maybe I'll just hang onto the Golf for another year
Decisions decisions ....

My lease comes up in 6 months. I'd love to keep it.
Does anyone know how that works?
Assuming it's with VWFS, you should be able to extend without issue for 3 months & if you indicate you're considering another VAG product then they'll often extend for up to 6 months.Does anyone know how that works?
Often options exist to sell the car back to the dealer & thus get a deal on buying it, but as you know trying to buy a car that you rent isn't black & white, however VWFS should make you aware of what's possible within the next couple of months if you've only got 6 months left.
I waited a good few months for mine to arrive so by the time it arrived and I had read/watched a lot of reviews; I was expecting it to be good and to enjoy it... but the reality is that it has surpassed my expectations in almost every way. It's fantastic wee car, there are a couple of small points I'd change, but on the whole I think it's a great package that's extremely well suited to UK roads.
My lease ends in just over 12 months and I'm unsure whether I'll lease again. The experience has been painless (I leased through my local dealership) but it's unlikely unless I can find another deal which I can't say no to, like the deal I got on the R. I'd have considered an R Estate (I like a fast wagon!) but they are DSG-only and unlike other spec choices, the gearbox isn't something that I'm prepared to compromise on.
Cheers,
Grant

Well I opened this thread with trepidation as my leased golf R arrives on Monday. My M135 goes away the same day and it's going to be a difficult weekend as I love the bmw. I usually keep my cars for long periods so this lease caper means changeover comes round so fast!! Anyway glad you all love the R. I need an all rounder but hope it matches the bmw for charisma.

Mine arrives 1st of March, reading nothing but great things, really looking forward to it too!I looked really hard for a good lease deal on the R estate. I found the best one would take the cost to £10500 over two years on the basic (if you can call the R basic!!) spec. Then hand the car back.
So wanting a few options and in no hurry for the car I changed my mind from a lease to pcp, this way I could get the spec and options I wanted. Not sure what the price will be over two years with depreciation.
I now have a build date for week 12 and a R estate with all the bells and whistles I want and a price that with all the options works out at around 20% off the list price. I used CarWow for the best price. That's from £41k down to £32k Looking forward to it.

I'm 13 months into my Lease & I'm loving it!
I don't usually hold on to cars long, but it's so good & does everything so well I'm struggling as to what to replace it with?!
It's really impressed me! Sure a fast Golf won't be everyone's Cup of Tea, but I love it, which for someone who gets so bored with cars, really says something.

Got round to test driving one at the weekend. Tried the GTI performance pack first (dsg) and then the R (dsg).
Wow.
Totally different car to the GTI. So much more purposeful, aggressive, sharper, planted yet pliant, composed, refined and ballistic fast.
As a do it all car it is right up there; I genuinely didn't think I would be as impressed with it as I was. Currently have a 125d which, with all its torque and decent top end (for a diesel) meant the GTI didn't feel very much different (the handling was much better though). But, the R was in a different league.

personally i would have been disappointed to go from a GTi or a 125d or other similarly powered motors to the Golf r
and not felt a considerable step up in all round performance. not least moving up to 300ps its just bound to be more lively even if it is hauling a bit of extra weight over a GTi.
its probably going to be the sort of thing folk currently driving r's will say if they ever get to test drive an r400.....assuming it happens. im sure it will once everyone else catches up with the r and VAG have to up the ante again......

I'm buying the Megane. Just seen the cracking lease deal on the Nisan 370z though. hmmmmmmm! Buying will give me the flexibility to do the odd trackday. The Renault isn't that hard core. Perfectly civilized in my view. Will miss the third gear oomph of the golf though. If there are deals on the estate I'll probably lease one for my Mrs when her Skoda Yeti goes.
