Hi all

Just updated the V5c for my car and bike, and there seems to be an error on the bike certificate

A bit of background: Bike purchased whilst living at 27BC during 11/13, purchased by me privately from the 1st keeper. We have since moved to 170NR during 11/14, and then 7CC during 11/15.

Now, I have a middle name that I don't use, the only people who use it are the HMRC, IPS etc. I have now received two V5s (one car one bike) bearing my name without the middle name, but whilst the previous owner of the car is correctly noted, the previous keeper of the bike is listed as my name, including the middle name, of 27BC

We've had three vehicles in the household the whole time and have managed to update the V5s without ticking the "New Keeper?" box so I'm doubtful that I'd have ticked one and not the other two

Obviously I'm about to give the DVLA a call and ask, but I'm just wondering if anybody has had anything similar happen? It might well be that the previous owner of the bike gave the DVLA my full name when registering it to me and that when I gave them my name without the middle name they put it down as a new keeper.

Not that it really matters, the address is correct and it's getting exported this year anyway...

So the previous keeper is shown as you at your first address and you've moved twice since?

Sounds like the error happened on the previous v5 and you didn't spot it, which could make it a bit harder to sort out now.

does it show 2 previous keepers?
if it does maybe worth trying to resolve, if not then just leave it

That's correct yes

Agree that I should have noticed, in my defence we had nothing but hassle with the property we moved to in 2014 that meant I wasn't really able to use the bike for a year and when we moved out we actually moved abroad

My own fault, I checked the name and address was correct when I got it but that was it... smile

I made a mistake with the number of keepers, previous owner bought it pre-reg so the list goes as such:

Current Keeper >> Me
1st Prev Keeper >> Also me, old address
2nd Prev Keeper >> Previous owner
3rd Prev Keeper >> Dealer

The V5 shows "3 Former Keepers"

In short, not worth getting worked up about, especially as it'll all get lost during export, but a minor annoyance anyway biggrin

I had similar once where I'd sent off for a V5 change of owner but then wanted to tax it, the post office insisted that I sent off a new change of owner form.

Ended up with two V5's and an additional owner added.

Anyway, I phoned up the DVLA, they were very helpful (!!) and sent out a new V5 minus one of the owners.

I had the opposite problem - I bought a bike off my dad (similar name, I've got a middle name, he hasn't) and sent it off as a new keeper change to the DVLA. V5C came back as a change of address & change of name rather than a new keeper. Rang up & explained it, their advice was to mark the incorrect parts on the V5, sign it, write a covering letter and send it back. I did all this and a corrected one arrived a week or so later.
In short, don't worry - they seem to sort these things out fairly quickly.

Haha, reassuring to think perhaps I didn't mistakenly tick the box!!

Won't be around over the weekend but shall drop them a call and see if they can sort it when I can smile

I had a similar problem. Had my V5 registered in my name, then moved address. I sent the V5 off with the new address, but put my name on it aswell in the address section.

Because of this, they think its a complete new keeper. I was current and previous keeper and the the V5 said there was 2 previous owners (only had 1 owner before i bought it)

I called the DVLA and explained the situation. Within a week I had a new V5 with it sorted. Back to 1 previous owner and the previous keeper was correct.

The DVLA can be useful sometimes.

^ Yes, they're red hot when it comes to correcting the registered keepers details promptly.

And dead cool when it comes to correcting a chassis number error. Wrote a nice letter, and roughly three months later, I got a new V5 with it corrected. In their defence though, they could have have asked for it to be inspected, and didn't.

Slight update

Phoned the DVLA soon after I posted, they advised me to send the V5c back with a covering letter, which I did, with a very clear account of the exact problem.

Now it's a month later and I've heard nothing, so it seems that either Aled, the only human working in the V5c department, hasn't had a chance to look at it, or they've lost it

Bit of a bother as I'll be exporting the bike in the next couple of weeks and will need a V5c to register it abroad, not to mention I suspect it'll be required by the company who will be transporting it...

It took me three months to get a minor V5C error corrected and I was pleasntly surprised that it was so quick, maybe my expectations are too low, but a month isn't very long in DVLA land.

I'll give them a call on Tuesday and see what's going on

If it looks like it's going to take an age to sort out I might see if I can submit form V62 and get another one, got to be worth the £25 fee not to miss a few months of riding in Mediterranean summer conditions...

Perhaps I could tell them its been stolen by the DVLA? wink

Hopefully I won't have the same problem, bought a car last Tuesday, filled out the trade slip and kept the remainder of the V5. Popped in to work yesterday to find a new V5 in my name for said vehicle. Not at all impressed with the seller pulling a trick like that. Usual DVLA line, send it back with a covering letter, hopefully they will sort it quicker than you have experienced.

Apparently nobody showed up for work today at the DVLA, phone line gives a message saying all lines are busy then they hang up on you biggrin

Fingers crossed they're all busy frantically looking for my V5c...

Well, I got through to Mark at the DVLA

Very helpful, explained the situation, put on hold while he spoke to the actual real human handling my case and due to the urgency (I might need to export the vehicle in a week or so) she's bumped me to the top of the queue to be completed today and the new V5c should be issued in 3-5 days

Not bad for the day after a bank holiday, I do think the DVLA have stepped up their game in the last few years

Happy driver now, also managed to get my build certificate for the boat sorted as well so I can register that in Croatia and go sailing - happy days!!

Well, I thought I'd wrap this up

New V5c dropped on the doormat yesterday, 4 days after being told it would arrive 3-5 days later...

Props to the DVLA for helping a faceless voice out when they needed help smile
