There is a 30mph speed limit repeater in my village.

Below the main red and white roundel with "30" on it - there is a smaller square blue and white sticker applied directly to the pole with "70" on it - facing the same direction as speed limit roundel.

Any idea what (if anything) this denotes?

A complete guess; national cycle network route number.

You live reasonably near Chester and I claim my 5 pounds.

If the OP's village is in Cheshire, it can't be. Number 70 is miles away - http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ncn/map/route/route-70

Back to the drawing board... smile

Well, that's interesting!

What's the point of a numbering system, if they're going to use the same numbers twice?

It turns out that colin p identified the correct meaning but the wrong category. The post I replied to mentioned national cycle route and the one I quoted is correct. A look at the Sustrans map reveals that the number is indeed duplicated but they refer to different things. The number 70 in Cheshire is a regional route. Hence the confusion. smile

Don't ask me who is responsible for allocating the numbers or on what basis. I haven't a clue and I'm not sure they do either. rolleyes

Actually it is right - according to that map there is also a road route 70 (purple on the map) running from South of Macclesfield to Chester.

Nothing but a lucky guess by me.

It could easily have been a quack-quack-oops.

I miss jammy answers to pub quizzes and a game of trivial persuit on a boxing day afternoon.
