In February 2015 I paid £3400 for a a 2006 VW Passat 2.0TDI SE Estate with 118k from a local family run used car dealer.
Car was in great condition, just what I need, with full VWSH etc. Since then I've had it serviced twice, cambelt done and all other required bits and bobs.

On Wednesday the gearbox went, the car is now undrivable, and I'm looking at quite a big bill to get it on the road. I'm self employed, and need a car, so I've hired one for 2 weeks so I can continue earning.

Questions is, do I have a case for the car dying a bit prematurely? It's now done 142k, I know that's fairly high, but these cars do run on if looked after (and I've looked after it).

Has anyone else on PH had a similar experience? The car had 3 months warranty on it when I boughtit, obviously this has run out now. However something doesn't sit right with me that this car has only lasted me 14 months.

The car may have only lasted you 14 months, however it is an old car - 11 years in total.
You won't have any luck attempting to go back to the garage, you've done 20k miles in it so it is entirely your issue to fix.
Afraid you're stuck with the bill!

I think you'll have to write this one down to bad luck, it's 10 years old, way over 100k miles.

From the garages point of view, who's to say how you've treated it?

Quoted just in case it disappears.

You're on your own.

If you want a guarantee that a car will last you longer than 14 months then you'll have to buy a car much newer than the one you did, with a price tag commensurate to that.

As it is you bought a bargain banger, got 14 months of use out of it and now it needs repairs, which is perfectly reasonable.

Ludicrous expectations like this are the main reason the majority of dealers won't touch cheap cars, which means you're limited, on the whole, to dealers pretending not to be dealers, or private sale, neither of which provide you with any security.

I've rejected 2 cars, but not after 20k miles and 14 months. You MAY be able to get a repair IF you can prove the fault existed at the point of purchase - you have no chance in this case.

The gearbox in your decade-old 142k mile car has died. No, it is NOT the problem of the dealer you bought it from fifteen months and 24k miles ago...

Is this a joke? A case against whom?

After 14 months and 24k miles, there was clearly no issues with the car that the dealer would conceivably be aware of at the time of sale.

Jesus, I don't believe this,is the OP serious or is this some sort of wind up?
You bought a ten year old banger with 118000 miles on the clock 14 months ago. Then after doing 24000 miles in it you're complaining that the gearbox has gone pop.Hard luck mate. For goodness sake find a second hand box and pay a mechanic to fit it and stop asking dopey questions.

I feel for the OP.

The alternator belt on my wife's 16 year old car broke this morning. We only bought the car 6 months ago so obviously I'll be rejecting it with the main dealer I bought from and I expect to have all of my £500 refunded.

Whilst some choose to be abusive...

You have no rights in law. It is an older car and correspondingly things go wrong. It is outside of any required or offered warranty by the manufacturer or the trader.

If it was maintained by VW throughout they might offer you a parts discount if you have them fit it, at their discretion (I know Audi offer this for older cars) but frankly that would be the expensive way forwards.

Find a reconditioned or second hand box and have a local garage fit it.

Genuine question:

How long do you think your car should have lasted before you spent money on repairs? It's 10 years old with over 140,000 miles on it.

What length of time would "sit right" with you?

Put yourself in the dealer's shoes - someone brings back a 10 year old car you sold over a year ago, during which time they've done 24k miles in it. They say the car is broken and want some form of contribution to repairs. What do you say?

Oh God - you're not thinking that VW should cough up here are you??

It hasn't really died prematurely - the economic lifetime of a car is 10yrs so it's spot-on. Not long ago the Government was paying people to scrap 8yr old cars.

Yes and they are allowed access to PC's by sloathful care workers who should be supervising them, not standing outside having a fag every 20 minutes!
