Not sure if this should be SP&L, Homes and Garden, or Business!

About a year ago we had to evict a Tenant (on HB) for non payment of rent and trashing the house. For a short period the HB was paid directly to the agent.

Out of the blue my Agent has received a debt collection letter (from the councils debt collector) for overpayment of 4 days of HB. This gives us until Thursday to pay otherwise there will be additional charges. The letter says various attempts have already been made to recover the debt. My agent says this is the first letter they have received.

I've called the council and they say they sent a final notice in September (no indication of any other letters or bills), then referred it to the debt collectors in February. The person on the phone they can't get hold of anyone in debt collection so have put a note on my file for someone to call me back. I don't hold out much hope!

Where do I stand with this? I will not just pay up without some sort of proof but if I don't pay tomorrow I'll end up with further costs.

What's really pisses me off is the council were giving them advice on how to maximize living rent free on me, while they collected HB and did not pass it on.

Unfortunately that's an American website so probably doesn't follow the same rules/laws as the UK.

Is expected the Council did not get back to me yesterday.
