Last year I got a good quote from a well known big insurer. It ends on 30th May so I was expecting letter from them soon.

"No need to do anything, we've done all the work saving you time and money" yeah right.

With another years no claims and exactly the same car and details they've come up with a quote 150% more than last year. Nothing new you might think, they expect some people won't bother looking for a better deal or switching. So I gave them a call and ask them how they came to that figure.

The response 'we don't know'

So there you have it, one of the biggest insurers in the country can't explain how they've increased my insurance by 150% in a year.

Checked this evening and got a quote £10 more from another big insurer so they've lost my business.

No, the person on the phone doesn't know.
The people in the relevant department know.

I know! I think it must be the first time in the history of the world that a renewal quote has been less-than-competitive!

Quick, OP, phone Watchdog!

This always happens to regular customers,"just sit back and do nothing",(and pay the extra).
I`m quite sure though if you had got to the right department you would have got it right down. My renewal is just £8.50 more than last year and about the same the year before.
Remember though George Osborne is getting over 50% more, insurance premium tax went up from 6% to 9.5%.

Not always. Out of the mainstream companies my current insurer Admiral have been the most competitive on renewal for the last four years running.

I've had to phone them every year to get the price sensible again. Hardly a big issue.

Got a letter this morning saying I should phone them and discuss the issue at hand. All I got was ' But sir , the terms and conditions have changed'

Then they couldn't tell me which ones had changed that affected my policy.

So I told them I went on a money saving site and told them it was £250 cheaper so why couldn't I just let the current policy run out and then renew via the comparison site.

'But sir, the terms will have changed so that will not be possible'

Ridiculous

I've just got mine through was £700 last year on a Corsa swapped to a Golf 8 months in and got charged £400 to swap over. and they have come up with £2133 for this year on my new Golf for the year?!

Best of it, I done a quote on the 11th May for 10th June (wanted general idea of price) and got a price of £1170 (acceptable for age etc..), gone back today changed the date to 28th of June (actual date of renewal) with nothing else changing and it's gone up to £1706!

Only changed the date as well, no other details changed. What could of happened in the space of 2 weeks to make it go up £600!

Had the same with Admiral today. I picked up a new Fiesta ST over the weekend and left it to today to sort out the insurance (had 7 days drive away to cover me in the meantime).

Anyway, paid £550 for a policy for my old car in January this year and I was expecting an uplift but wasn't expecting a £475 increase!

I knew this would happen so before hand I ran a quote from Admiral for a full year in the ST with exactly the same details which came out at £685 for the full 12 months.

I did contest this but the Indian bloke on the other end was having none of it, just kept banging on about the ST being an increased risk etc..

He refused to accept that I had an Admiral quote for the car for £685 to hand and I even offered the quote number which he refused.

When I requested to speak to someone senior to him he agreed that the price was too high and got the "pricing dept" involved and would get back to me as soon as they had an answer.

In the last 10 minutes I've had an email showing the changes and the amount of £475 to be taken from my account shortly. Either the email was sent in error or he lied and has taken the money anyway.

We shall see...

my post is the same with Admiral...

If I get my insurance on the 10th when it expires it's £1100... Wait 18 more days with the same information and its £600 more?! Will have to ring them and see just want them to extend the quote till the 28th will do me!
