Hi Chaps,

We bought a car (local private sale) on Monday (16th May). The car was SORNed by the previous owner, and needs a few jobs sorting, so he kindly trailered it round onto our drive to enable us to keep it SORN until the work is completed.

I posted the V890 form on Tuesday (17th), but the vehicle status on the DVLA website is showing as 'Not taxed keeper change' - indicating they have received the previous owner's V5C, and confirmed by us receiving the new V5C yesterday (21st).

I am now not sure if DVLA have received the V890. Does it normally take longer to register on the website than the change of keeper? I retained the Post Office proof of posting, but didn't use the 'signed for' service.

Should've just used the reference number on the new keeper supplement to SORN it online.

If you've still got it, not the one on your new V5c, it might be worth a try.

Sometimes it doesn't work like it should, but you should be able to do it. I did it last week.

Which means it's either a change of taxation class or an out of date V5c.

Do a search. Several people have done it by adding a 0, IIRC, to the beginning of the reference number.

The online option is definitely there.

Click Apply
Click the underlined hyperlink
Click the second radio button on the dropdown
Type in the 12 digit reference number from the NKS
Add the registration number*

Worked for me as well.

 * i.e. the VRM

You can check the date of the latest V5C here - https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

I'm not convinced adding an initial 0 to an out of date reference number could work. Each one is unique.

I can now see that the DVLA website contradicts itself somewhat. On one page it gives the impression that SORN must be done by post if you are not the vehicle's registered keeper - which you won't be immediately after purchase. However, if you proceed with the online application, there is then the option to use the doc ref number off New Keeper's Supplement, V5C/2mad

yes The gov.uk web site is notorious for giving misleading/conflicting information. In this case somebody in Swansea has yet to cotton on to the fact it conflicts with the introduction of the new BETA online service. The quill pen section can't keep up with the techno whizz kids in the secret room in the basement. wink
