Might as well just let someone mug and assault me if it's going to cause all that trouble.
As I understand it, it's fine to hit them with your bag, etc in reasonable self defence.

It's the "going prepared" with an offensive weapon aspect that is illegal.

Well that's interesting. When did the law change?

My wife used to live alone in Holland. She had a small pepper spray just in case (common over there). Flew back and forth many times with it to the uk with no issues - but this was years ago.

I think I now need to check the "drawer full of ste" to make sure it went in the bin at some point in the last 12 years! Not seen it for ages, but wouldn't fancy doing a stretch for it...
Changed long ago and punitive measures taken against anyone caught with it.

If I were you, I'd check quickly!

We've checked the man drawer, her box full of old stuff and the cupboard that's the equivalent of the door in The Twighlight Zone.
Pretty confident it's gone smile

It always struck me that something like oven cleaner spray would probably do rather more damage than pepper spray.

Mrs215 is from Czech Republic where you can buy CS and pepper spray over the counter in your local newsagents. She did have a can when she first came over to stay here, but I threw it out a long time agao.

A few years ago before that though, when she was working as a tour guide, a Plod friend of her brother gave her a canister of the Czech Police issue spray to take with her "just in case" (right nasty stuff too apparently).
She flew backwards and forwards for years with this in her hand luggage without anyone ever batting an eye!

She was lucky, very lucky. My wife's friend was caught coming back from France with a spray and was convinced she was going straight to jail!

20 odd years ago I had an american friend at school who got a proper grilling at Heathrow for trying to bring her can of Mace into the country.

Last time I checked, bludgeons like a Mace were pretty much the definition of medieval whoop-ass. I'd expect a grilling if I tried to bring a whole can of whoop-ass onto a plane, what if someone made me open it?

Tempted to buy this on a few occasions just to keep on my person.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FARB-GEL-Farbgel-Red-Dye...

Farb-Gel is the 100% legal alternative to pepper spray. It does not contain any harmful chemicals and is non-toxic.
Press to release and spray the red gel onto the attackers face, giving you vital seconds to escape and call the police.

call the police = size 10 in the bks

Must be some coppers on here that can say for certain if this is definitely legal.
i would get a lot of relief knowing that the guy who put me in ICU for 3 months was bright red, for a week ....
