Have to drive through London on Wednesdays for work, using the a10 a406 and a40, regularly see normal cars with blue lights built into the indicators etc and sirens, always plain clothed, would never be able to tell they are police cars or whatnot, I would hazard a guess CID or something.

Last Wednesday I saw a c350 cdi 2011 merc, a newish seat Ibiza fr, and some Honda 4x4 thing.

To be honest, I expected these to have been turned into sneaky ticket issuing service long ago, right after the public had come to regard you harmless.

I used to know an A+E consultant who was also a BASICS doctor ,he would attend serious incidents requiring a doctor .
He had an Audi RS estate with built in lights and sirens .
Local plod were very jealous of his car and were impressed with his aptitude behind the wheel.
He was also a circuit doctor .
He had a line in very bright headgear, but was the scruffiest dressed bloke ever .

These sound very much like the Walts being discussed in the other thread. Are you absolutely certain of their credentials?

It seems very unlikely that real counter terrorism officers would need to provide their own cars and fit their own blue lights.

Saw badges and ID's but he didn't really confirm what he actually did. Everything was legit and did see him once on lights going the wrong way round a traffic island to beat traffic. Don't think he works for them anymore and probably wouldn't answer any questions anyway.

Our bosses have maintained the stance that we will not be doing enforcement at all. I don't know what will happen if we get swallowed up in the proposed National Transport Constabulary.

My experience is they do a good job.

I have gone through a few sets of pads and front splitters when initially spotting their battenburgs tucked up on the hidey ramps on motorways mind hehe

the aussies and kiwis manage quite well their equivalents being police staff , what I can see being a sticking point is 'cross crewing' should that happen - becasue no doubt the Sworn element would still be required to provide aid to the county forces ...

Friends with a chap who is a counter terrorism officer, he has his car all set up with sirens and blue lights for emergency incidents when he is at home etc. Heads of fire stations have the same sort of thing I think.
Got a friend like this too. He's something to do with counter terrorism but not a police officer from what I understand. His cars are always big powered saloons with lights and sirens that look exactly like what an unmarked car would have except without the extra weight of equipment in the back as it was his personal car.

It's more of a "Bombs gone off in London, terrorism suspected, more bombs suspected....all hands report for duty"

He also has a general week on/week off with regards to being "on call" which means no drinking, no hols, phone on and loud etc etc just in case he is needed for something.

What is the proposed "National Transport Constabulary" ?

I heard a rumour a while back that government were considering the possibility of merging (BTP ?) CNC and Mod Plod into some kind of "Infrastructure Constabulary" but wasn't aware The Highways Agency were also part of this ....

Given that the CNC and MOD Police perform an armed security/ guarding role and are required to carry firearms I can't see the overlap with Highways ....

If they didn't want people to confuse them with real police cars, the beacons on the roof would be orange.

I broke down at the side of a busy motorway. Did the usual thing, got out and over the Armco whilst I waited for the recovery truck. Recovery service sent their driver to A1 junction 1, I was at A1 junction 65, about 275 miles away. It was chucking down with rain, cold and dark. HATOs turned up, fended the car off (I'd been there so long the battery had flattened so no hazard lights and an unlit section of motorway). They gave me a warm blanket and waterproof ponch to keep me dry and stood with me until the recovery truck turned up. Would it have been a good use of a motorway police unit? No. Was I massively grateful to have them there? Yes indeed.
