I meant me! I hope you mean Tapereel, who has 'form' on here...
Oh fair enough, sorry, slow today! 'Form' eh? Explains a lot. I assume he has been hurt by people in his life or his job and thus is taking it out on the keyboard.Yes, perhaps my question was stupid but i have heard a few reports (in Scotland) actually of them not all being working or switched on, hence the question.
What speed did you get caught at? I wonder if they have the same upper limit as the gasto's or whatever the boxes at the side of the road are called.

The managed motorways do have them
No they don't, they have variable speed cameras. This says that the cameras can work as average speed cameras but you are correct at the moment they do not. I have it in my mind that they will one day.

Most of the increase has been in the single new system on the A9 in Scotland as the article says. There are a lot of temporary systems on the road works on the motorway to introduce smart motorways. So yes, perhaps double but all justified it would seem. The headline detracts from the article perhaps.

I doubt they would be accurate enough to enforce the numerous limit changes over such short distances. Imagine two cars travelling close together, one passes under a gantry showing 50, the next a few seconds later is subject to NSL. The next gantry may be only a few hundred m away and showing a different limit. The second car arrives before the first. Then factor in trucks and vans with different limits. Also consider that not every plate is read due to visibility / obstruction by HGV etc. This says that the cameras can work as average speed cameras but you are correct at the moment they do not. I have it in my mind that they will one day.
I know computers are very clever, but it seems against the spirit of speed limit enforcement. The idea is to generally reduce traffic speeds to enhance safety, not to penalise individuals who slightly exceed an arbitrary limit over a short distance. I say arbitrary because the limit is not selected due to a dangerous road feature but is set to aid traffic flow.
Notwithstanding all that it would be virtually impossible to mount a defence unless you had a dashcam, and even then it would probably not be evidential quality.

It would be interesting to invest in camera equipment that doesn't work but I can't see a purpose for that. Maybe the police missed the legislation that requires them to pass statistics to johnwilliams77. I'll let them know.
Actually most of the old A77 cameras were dummies, the only working sets were the Hansel Village and at the seaweed factory near Girvan. PS, they have just been upgraded so they now all work.
