Would I need need to pay my excess even being non fault? How would this work?
If you're claiming direct from tp insurers, then no. If claiming from your own, then yes, although you will be able to claim it back.

UPDATE:

Brought car back at direct insurance sale auction, £1800 all in. Originally the insurance wanted £3350 to buy it back but declined. My payout was £5200

My friend at the garage started work, all major suspension and wing damage sorted, waiting for body work and spray, laser alignment then MOT. Should be £700 to get it back on the road which I'm pleased about and extra money in the pocket. I intend to keep the car anyway.

I'll post another update after everything sorted and back on the road.

Yep made a profit from it but that wasn't the goal here. I'm just glad to have the car back with a bit of extra cash

Happy end to the story, well done OP, also well done for stopping them drive off at the beginning, would have been a lot harder for you if you didnt

Did anything happen to the driver or father?

well, I wouldnt call it a pofit in the long run really. The car will have a cat C marker and this does massively effect the value when you come to sell or trade in - if you can even find someone who wants a cat C.

I would imagine the OP will keep the car and run it into ground, and why not? He knows what the damage was and how it was repaired.
