Car parked on my driveway last night - report it?
Discussion
We live on a modern housing estate, with parking in small courtyards behind the houses. Last night about half eleven I took the dog for a final stroll and was very surprised to see a car parked on the entrance to the parking behind my house. Tucked well back from the road too, not just pulled off the back of the pavement.
There was a guy sat in it, who told me he was waiting for a friend who was just round the corner so had parked up to make a phonecall. Loads of parking available on the street. About 5 mins later he drove off, I'm pretty sure on his own.
I noted down the reg plate, and when I checked the DVLA website, mainly to make sure I'd remembered it correctly, and the car is showing as SORN. I'm pretty sure he's up to something so is it worth a report to 101?

Not worth reporting really he stated he was waiting for a mate then left. So maybe picked his mate up as stated?
Just because the car is SORN online doesn't mean he's driving illegally. He could have taxed it a couple of days before and website hasn't caught up. Could also be a trader on a trade policy plus many other reasons. If you wish to report it, report to DVLA but not the police.

You shouldn't keep bothering the police for such trivial things.
I did report it to 101. Waited half an hour for a call-back, but the call handler was very helpful, immediately started asking about signs of hash in the car or any smell of it and said he would pass on to the intelligence team. There have been issues with dealers in the flats on the estate in the past...
Only ran the DVLA check to make sure what I'd remembered as the number plate was correct for that model of car...

Report it. Three cars were stolen from my road a few months ago. My neighbour saw a guy walk down the road and turn around then carry on in the same direction, later another guy walked past carrying a steering lock... OK so he rings the bill.
Next day our local plod drop by to see him, informed him that three cars were stolen and perhaps he had seen something.... well I shall not moan on about why plod decided to stay in a nice warm police station but as my Ranger had been nicked two years before off the drive I was not surprised. Nor was I surprised when a major ringing operation was discovered five miles from where we live and millions of quids worth of spares, yep they broke them for parts, were found including the remains of Merc 4 x 4 that belonged to café owner near my north London office.
So yes, report it or leave the thieves in peace to carry on nicking your car. By the way I have had three attempted car thefts and two stolen, neither recovered.

Years ago, we had a Residents Association in this area and regular meetings with Police on various matters. At several of these , the ( called at time) Beat Sergeant always said that any & all information was useful. I regularly see NHW requests to report any strange cars driving through/parked around. So from that -report it.
Me and the missus went to the local neighbourhood watch in our new area for the first time with a local Bobby and he was telling a tale of some dodgy car in the area a resident noted the region number down. I cant remember what they had done but some type of small garden theft.
Using cctv locally including buses! They managed to pin the guys on loads of crimes from further afield... I was amazed to be honest. Pat on the back to the police from me

I've been rebuilding a house recently, it's on a dead end lane in a small village and due to the high incidence of s sniffing around, I installed some cameras. One day two very dodgy looking characters pitched up, parked outside, engine running for 10 mins til I went outside and asked if I could help. Some c0ck & bull story about looking for a quarry then they moved on. I reported them to the police who said I must have go their number wrong as it wasn't registered. I checked again and looked at my CCTV, no mistake. Went on an insurance comparison website, typed the number in and it all worked OK telling me exactly the type of car I'd just seen. Called the police back and they admitted that scrapped cars are removed from their database whereas they might be slower to be removed from the insurers database. Sounded like they'd cloned a scrapped vehicle so the police added the number back to their database to flag up if it went past a camera. Why on earth don't they flag scrapped cars to pull them automatically without the public having to do their job for them?
Nope, tonight when we came home there was a girl sitting on the road sign at the corner of my house, said the chain had just come off her bike. 5 mins later I took dog for a walk and the same Merc pulled up, passed her a small package and reversed off rapidly. Her bike miraculously recovered at the same time...

Perhaps the small package contained a tool kit?...Or more likely some gear...........
