Toads?
Not just toads but naterjack ones. These are special toads it appears.

I assume you've read the book. The telephone conversation I had with him was bewildering. I told him that giving a PC an order which included a provision not to take any notice of a senior officer put the PC is a dreadful position. I just couldn't get him to understand. It seems that the defence of toads, or at least those of the naterjack variety, was more important than the defence of people.

I'd phoned him from home, as I was on nights and he was on days, and my wife was listening to the conversation, such as it was. When I hung up, and stared into the distance no doubt, my wife asked me who he was. I said a chief constable some time soon. She asked if he would be in charge of our force and I said no. She expressed relief. When he hit the papers some time later, for various reasons, she recognised him. She'd met him when he was a sergeant, I think still at Uni. She said: 'I thought him an idiot from the first words he uttered.'

Astute my Mrs. She married me after all.
