If it was a gatso type camera (are you sure?) they sometime flash facing, but you won't get a ticket as they aren't type approved for facing use.

You mean Truvelo I guess? They have sensors embedded in the road so don't flash unless you are on their side of the road.
Gatsos often flash at you if you are exceeding the limit on the road but they are on the opposite side and therefore setup to catch people on that side. In this case I have only seen them flash once, and nothing will come of it.

Truvelo D-Cam can work from either side of the road, approaching or receding and they can do that both at the same time.

Which ones are those? Are there many?

I guess I'll have to check out that enemy.

OK, I've checked.

Barely any, and I've never seen one.
I'll keep looking as I expect they'll be like a plague of locusts given a little time.

Most of the flashy type speed cameras don't flash when you are speeding (even when you are going the right way, ie: away from them), either on motorways or normal roads so I'm guessing most are switched off/empty and I bet many of those which do flash are not taking a photo anyway.

OP - were you speeding?

If not, then you will be safe enough.

Gatso will need to flash twice as it uses the road markings as a secondary speed check.

The Gatso that was active on West Wycombe Road westbound (A40) in High Wycombe for years, has been replaced with a new style that I do not recognise and markings added to the eastbound side of the road surface in addition to the existing westbound ones. I assume it is not a Truvelo because they don't usually have markings on the road IIRC.

They are not infallible... they are prone to flashing from time to time for no good reason.

As this Redspeed on in Barrow last year...

At least it had a valid calibration certificate!

I'm surprised our resident expert speed witness hasn't surfaced to tell us that along with all these multidirectional cameras, road markings are not strictly necessary.
