Anybody know where the cameras are situated on Tower Bridge? Just got NIP through yesterday.... apparently going far too fast in a 20!

Feeling doubly stupid because I go over Tower Bridge quite a lot, and have never realised it was a 20, presumably because the traffic is always backed up and you can never get that fast.

Except, that is, at 7:42 on a Sunday morning, when there is no traffic, and no people. And one now very p**sed off driver.

The obvious implication here is that I'm not an 'aware' driver (my fault again), so I deserve all I get.

The worst bit is that, assuming I get 3 points and a fine, it will bring my total points to 9, making my situation untenable with regards insurance, so I will have to give up my dream, just because on my own stupidity.

Gutted.

PS. obviously this would be a ridiculous thing to do, but what might happen if I was to put the named driver (insurance) on the NIP, and then, when she receives her copy of the form, she puts my details in? Would it go into an infinite loop, or would we both end up in court in loads of trouble?

Edited to add: a little search on google produced this:

Also check that the camera that did you was calibrated and certified for 20 mph. It may only be for speeds of 30+

Just been up to Tower Bridge, and it seems that I'm as much of a muppet is it appeared initially. The signs are blatently obvious, though, on first appearance, there doesn't appear to be any reason for the limit. Not that that's any excuse.

Apparently, my enthusiasm for getting to my 1/2 marathon was such that I averaged 40mph between the two sets of cameras. In no way am I trying to justify or excuse this, especially given that, if it wasn't a 20, it would have been a 30. And 40 is still way above that limit. I was in charge of the vehicle, and there was a speed limit that I exceeded.

However, in my opinion (for what it is worth, which, in this situation, is not much), this was not inappropriate for the conditions. Or maybe it was. Who can say? Because there was nobody else there to see it. But whether you agree with speed cameras or not, I hope you can understand that I'm still extremely cross with myself for getting it so very wrong.

And, to add insult to injury, I only got 1:55:34 in the race, rather than the 1:45 I was hoping for.

If you simply do not reply to the NIP,the original offence is dropped and the registered keeper will receive 3pts and £60 fine.

SPECS on Tower Bridge

I live round the corner from Tower Bridge and have travelleed over it a number of times recently. I noticed the cameras and thought that it might be SPECS, but in the absence of any news annoucemenets or forum discussion, I assumed that they may be part of the CC or Ring of Steel camera system.

Luckily I haven't received any NIP's so far but I will now have stick to the limit rigidly next time I cross over.

During peak times the traffic is heavy and you would have to be very lucky to achieve an average speed of 20mph, however, during quiet periods (weekends / early morning etc) it would quite safe to go across at 30.

I went over it this morning and the Road Pilot went mental screaming "20mph SPECS" it knew they were there and I haven't updated for about a month so they must be quite old. If its any consolation if it wasn't for that going off I wouldn't have seen the signs or cameras.

On another side note it also screamed SPECS down Commercial Road, just past the broken down Tuscan, sorry I didn't stop but I was running late

Correct all that I went over LONDON BRIDGE when it went mental

I hate to tell you all, but they have been there for over a year.....

AFAICT though they are set above 30mph, and my guess is that they are set at 35mph (the normal +10%+2mph limit) from what I've read on forums about them (I've not yet seen a post from someone with a NIP below 35mph).

20mph does seem a little bit daft until one of those stupid tourists stumbles in front of your car as has happened to me (it's on my route too/from work) once when they overbalance trying to take a photo.

For once I was glad that I was sticking to the 20mph as I stopped about 2 foot away from this persons leg.

My Road Angel has known about them for about 8 months IIRC.

As for what to do, pop over to peipoo and do a lot of reading. First thing will be to ask for the "photographic evidence", but as they are SPECS they unfortunatly will probably have a good photo of you grining at the camera as you went over it, so it may limit you to a PACE defense.

Sorry.

I'm no expert on SPECS, but isn't it only a number plate recognition device coupled in with a stop clock type idea?

I wasn't aware that they actually took photographs per se...

I wait to be corrected.

It may not be so bad. Are insurers too worried by SP30s, even 3 of em?

I know it's completely different, but our fleet insurers don't even want to know about speeding. They're just bothered about the more "meaty" offences (IN10, DR10 etc)

I drive that area daily. The SPECS and 20 limit on Tower Bridge must have been there for at least 18 months - 2 years now. Never seen any on Commercial Road or London Bridge though?

That's because you're usually driving too fast to see them.

I agree. Shop around, I've got 8 and elephant.co.uk didn't seem to care. If you're married put the policy (not car ownership) in your wife's name. Spouses can transfer NCB whenever they like, I insure a 911 turbo for £950 with 8 points, no NCB because 2nd vehicle, and a £40k total loss two years ago.
