...you didn't mention the charity event. That's very important - OP mentioned it three times.

You are all entitled to your own opinion it dosent mean that's it's correct!
What I don't understand is people who want to be on the forum just to have a go at somebody but they don't even register as who they are or what they do. We have all made mistakes in our life. I guess I shouldn't have been so gullible and asked for some advice. Live and learn.
As always you will get some good advice on PH.

There are also a few sanctimonious tts who obviously never exceeded a speed limit in their lives. In fact they probably never did anything at all except post on web forums and played with their willies.

Good Luck!

Mentioning that will likely increase the ban!!

I bet most of the posters have exceeded the speed limit. Equally I bet very few have exceeded it by nearly 50%. That may be why some posters are less than sympathetic...

112 in a 70.

Play it right and I'd still say he's driving himself home.
Probably worth a solicitor though, and the OP can afford it, a ban will inconvenience him more than the fine.

OK here is some advice.

1. Return the paperwork and fill it in honestly.
2. Don't expect to get any mileage out of "swapping drivers, don't know" - it's your responsibility to know!
3. Turn up to court smartly dressed in a suit, say you're sorry and hope for the best. Get references to say you're a good boy.
4. Don't expect to be driving home.

Seriously that's a 120 on the dash - you're going to get bullyrammed.
The camera site should be named or numbered on the notice, so you can work out were they got you.

As said look smart act like you knew you were mad and you have learnt your lesson. Mags don't want excuses just that you have had s shock and learnt your lesson.

The guidance for that speed is up to 56 day ban and and somewhere around 75% of a weeks earnings as a fine.

Get the photos if you don't know how was driving but don't drag it out, try and work it out as messing about with that will just end in tears.

You all get a ban, if that means you lose your job and home and that effects wide and kids etc let them know.

I believe its estimated 87.6% of drivers regularly exceed the speed limits, a fairly hefty 34% exceeding it up to 20%.

I exceeded it accelerating after an unmarked bike at 92 (both his speed and my eventual speed) on the A12 on a nice sunny day when the road was clear... Not my best moment in life if I'm honest and just having the 'talk' with the officer and the repercussions has adjusted my driving style significantly.

I received an SP30.... The officer did mention the fact that if i'd gone 3mph faster i'd be in for an instant ban... Scary.

The van should have taken a lovely picture of the driver from which an identification shouldn't be difficult.

If you're not the culprit then tell them and offer them up - it's not being a grass - its someone who has the potential to end someones life in on an unpredictable section of motorway that has in recent months suffered some very significant crashes. Not to mention the fact that they're doing that speed in someone else's car and you're the one who will get bummed otherwise.

If it is you then you can merely put on your best suit, solicitor up and hope that you're met with relative leniency. Probably worth looking at train schedules and getting an all day ticket... avoids any unnecessary low loaders and probably sets a better tone.

Definitely don't do what a friend did when they were caught speeding on the M2 over Strood bridge - the officer in court stated that he was travelling "between 84 and 86mph" to which he shouted "So 85 then" and received an instant ban and penalty.

FWIW there are loads of little hidden places they stuff the cameras along there... normally a month or two after an accident they ramp up the placements, then it dies down to normal levels.

Just to correct the presumption that all speedometers over-read - on modern cars they usually don't. It's more common for them to be spot on, compared to GPS on a straight and level bit of road.

Worth testing with a tomtom or phone app as a comparator on any new-to-you car so you have a better idea if there's some margin for error on the displayed speed.

Checked at what speed though?
No vehicle is permitted to under-read at any speed and any over-read will increase (when read as MPH rather than percentage) as speed increases.

So although some vehicles may be almost insignificantly out at 30MPH and perhaps your 2MPH out at 70MPH, I would like someone to show me their speedo isn't significantly out at 150MPH (when most will be showing nearer 160 than 150).

Let them know you are an active member of PH and take an active interest in driving quickly but only for charity runs. OMG what has this site done to me - I'm not Daily Mail outraged of Tunbridge Wells 'killer driver' Mumsnet type normally!

Just learn to keep it under a ton FFS and the other key bit of advice has already been presented. Heed it, learn and move on with no ban.

I've calibrated my speedo against GPS under quite a few different circumstances.

Summer tyres: Constant 2mph overread from 0 to 159mph.
Winter tyres: Constant 1mph overread from 0 to 95mph.

What's the car?
The method the vehicle uses to determine its own speed will obviously make a difference.
Most vehicles do over-read significantly, although newer vehicles will likely be more accurate.
