I've calibrated my speedo against GPS under quite a few different circumstances.

Summer tyres: Constant 2mph overread from 0 to 159mph.
Winter tyres: Constant 1mph overread from 0 to 95mph.
What's the car?
The method the vehicle uses to determine its own speed will obviously make a difference.
Most vehicles do over-read significantly, although newer vehicles will likely be more accurate.
2008 Cayman 2.7, looking at the digital speed reading rather than the tiny ornamental steam gauge.

I realise that I've misstated the calibration range: obviously the speedo isn't reading 2mph at rest! I guess in reality I've checked it from 20-159mph.

Most were out by 2kph at 100kph. Hardly significant
Your comment is misleading anyone else that doesn't bother to read the results.

The 3 Porsches in that test I linked are all much as you say at 100kph so I've no reason to doubt you. But the people that insist speedometer over-read is a myth are talking as much garbage as those that claim getting caught at 112MPH must mean the speedo said 120 (unless we specifically know the car in question and have information to refer to of course, because flat out an XR3i I had in the 80's said I was doing 140MPH and the book speed was only 116MPH so that was one hell of an over-read).

As always you will get some good advice on PH.

There are also a few sanctimonious tts who obviously never exceeded a speed limit in their lives. In fact they probably never did anything at all except post on web forums and played with their willies.

Good Luck!
I bet most of the posters have exceeded the speed limit. Equally I bet very few have exceeded it by nearly 50%. That may be why some posters are less than sympathetic...
Well I have exceeded the limit by 50% as I reckon most people here have at some time.

I don't make a habit of it though.

I had My old BMW E36 328i Sport foot to the floor-flat out with nothing more left to go on a long, flat straight piece of tarmac once.

The speedometer was sat just on the 150mph mark and My sat nav was showing 146mph - So only @ 4mph out (BMW state the top speed should be 147mph).

The last time I got pulled over on the M1 by an unmarked Police car in My BMW E46 330, the speedometer was sat on 115mph, the sat nav read 114mph and the officer confirmed that he's clocked Me at 114mph - So 1mph out at 115mph (And I got let off with just a warning to slow down - "Which was nice!").

So I would say that the speedometers in BMW's are pretty accurate (or I've been incredibly lucky to find the only two accurate speedometers they ever made!).

The speedometer in My Ferrari 348 on the other hand is nowhere near as accurate!

Again, on a long, flat, straight stretch of tarmac, at an indicated 130mph on the speedometer, the sat nav shows only @ 115mph.

The spot mentioned is usually on the Dover bound carriageway, a little triangular grass island with the van parked on it ,when you see it your already in range .
A favourite spot for nabbing unwary van drivers scuttling for the ferry .

Definitely don't do what a friend did when they were caught speeding on the M2 over Strood bridge - the officer in court stated that he was travelling "between 84 and 86mph" to which he shouted "So 85 then" and received an instant ban and penalty.

FWIW there are loads of little hidden places they stuff the cameras along there... normally a month or two after an accident they ramp up the placements, then it dies down to normal levels.

Presumably your friend was caught by an unmarked car rather than a camera van?

I only ask as I travel on the A2/M2 from London to Canterbury regularly, and once clear of Bexley, I wasn't aware of any key camera locations!?
