Okay, let's try to get this back on topic. An update from me is that the boy who keyed the cars is just 12. He is already known to authorities, and local plod are pretty pleased about the footage. We've been asked to go to the station to make statements, so that he can be charged (are juveniles charged?) for each vehicle he damaged.

Of the 6 cars he scratched, just 3 are shown in footage. Would a judge be happy that on balance, he scratched all 6? I guess so. If the girls he was with say that he did, the combination of witness statements from them plus the video from my camera is pretty compelling.

I get the impression from what the police are saying that this would go to court - I have no clue how that works for a kid - and there is no talk of this saying sorry first offence liberal huggy stuff.
I wonder if the people who had their cars scratched will ever get any money from him to pay for the repairs. No real justice if the victim does not their property repaired.

The minimum sentence should be community service equaling the time at the minimum wage to the value of repairs plus any costs to the 3rd parties received.

Sadly I very much doubt this will be the case? any one in the know what the sentencing guidelines are for this type of scum behavior? In my opinion this should be heavily punished & publicised.

I for one have threatened someone who "ran over my car" one Saturday night that If I ever saw them in my street again they would receive due punishment for the damage. The lad was similar aged, lived locally & to this day he'll cross the street If he sees me & he's in his 20's now!

Sadly now that would likely get local plod round your door threatening you.

Few year back I came back off holidays to female neighbour upset saying she hasn't been able to park in her space since I went on hols. Turns out guy about 7 houses down mechanic, had noticed I was off and started parking his cars sideways across her space and mine. Bearing in mind his house was in a bit built by another developer no way he could claim rights to this parking. He had a lot of cars some road legal some not.

Anyway thought he would stop since I was back but no came home after a long day and his n Reg 5 series pickup conversion parked sideway across my bay and hers. He also drove like an absolute loon at least once a week and several neighbours were fed up with him. I proceeded to block his car in and door knock. He answers I ask him kindly to stop parking sideways across our bays. He says he is off in a minute and had to unload something. Rather than park outside his house he wanted to lug it 300 yards I asked ? His little brain was a bit stumped by this. I said look you can move the car stop parking there and we get on with life. Or you can do it again and then I can get section 59 notices slapped on your cars the way you drive and especially the unmot bike he used yo ride without a helmet etc.

He says ok, I leave get up he road and he comes shouting yea run you f ing twot etc. I turned around and started running back to his house and he locks the door shut. Won't answer so I go home.

He calls plod they rock up in the form of two pscos. They threaten to arrest me tell he pointing my finger is a serious offence
I am a big guy and can't go round upsetting my neighbors.

Sidestep the point about prison with one force's recorded crime. I guess that's easier than facing the fact that full prisons don't really support your 'make-it-up-as-you-go-along' point about sentencing.

As I said before, the CSEW isn't recorded crime and is the longest running data set on crime in the UK. It's conclusions are unambiguous, as is all the academic work around why crime has fallen since the mid 1990s across a lot of Western societies.

Naturally you'll dismiss it because your simplistic logic is, "There are some data manipulation therefore all data is manipulated". Clearly the intelligent position to take.

You work for the Government. Naturally that makes you an authority on all the vast volume of data the Government collects, processes and uses over history.

So the prisons did fill themselves then?

Here are the latest prison data: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...

It's data collected and presented by the Government so according to 'speedyguy' it's 'bullst' and 'lies'.

The Government are obviously manipulating / lying about the number.

Went to the station today to make a statement. "I did not give anybody permission to damage my car". The PC used a phone with a USB keyboard! Mental. Took about an hour. Either way I feel like I've done my good citizen bit. The CCTV footage that I burned to CD-R plus some blown up stills are in as evidence.

I used to read SPL to learn a little about the way our legal system operated. There were some very clued up posters, sensible questions and (amongst the rubbish) good answers.

Its a great pity to see that whilst we still have decent topics like this, the internet warrior thugs with their tales of dragging people into dark alleys, and amusing frozen sausages have moved in. I guess it was inevitable given the way other fora are going.

To the good posters - keep it up. I wish the knuckle draggers would bugger off though.

The boy is going to juvenile court.

From my POV, this was the best possible outcome.

I've been given some additional forms to fill in (as have the neighbours) relating to compensation. Should we expect anything? Or is this a red herring as his parent will not be able to pay.

Make sure you all stick together and push it as far as you can. Don't know if it can get as far as a CCJ in the event of a default or not but if it does go for it and escLate to High Court for enforcement. Should fk up their lives for a while.

9 months since the boy scratched the cars in the street, and the neighbours and I have - somewhat out of the blue as things have been very quiet and we didn't want to create work for the tiny plod presence in our town - we have received letters from the courts awarding compensation. This is not something I've been through before, so here's the "Orders" section of the letter:

"On 18th August at <my town> without lawful excuse, damaged <a motor vehicle> to the value of £420 belonging to <me> intending to destroy or damage such property or being reckless as to whether such property would be destroyed or damaged. Compensation order made: £110."

We're all pretty chuffed that this got to court in the end. Feels like closure! As neighbours we agree that the token £1/month we might now receive trickling into our accounts is better spent on us, errrr, middle-class victims, than on his KFC or his vaping or his phone contract.

So thanks for reading since my original post, and now I build up to my grand finale... JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED!

Great, got there in the end. I managed to get compo from some muppet who damaged my car and yes, you're quite right, seeing the £20 or so dripping in every month and thinking about it depriving him of something more fun is indeed thoroughly satisfying.

Good to hear it seems to have worked out in the end.

I've been on the receiving end of such stuff more than once, and nowadays am pretty much in the "summary execution" camp for how to deal with the little bds, but you've certainly got a better result than I'd have hoped for based on the start of this thread, well done.

Now you know who the little is would be shame if he was to fall down some stairs one dark night
and suffer a few scratches and bumps, loose a few teeth and such like.
After he's weighed in with the court first.
Would not want him to get behind with any payments due to being off work for year.
