84mph on the A85

[quote=castex]This afternoon I celebrated escaping the 20mph crawl around Loch Lomond by unleashing the 1.5dci.

Funny thing is I often hark back to the days when most cars I owned would take miles before hitting 60 let alone 85. OK so I am talking the 1960's & things like Morris Minors & A35's but given todays congested roads & that trying to make up for lost time in queues etc maybe a slow clunker is the answer. You avoid being tempted to speed & you'll get to your destination in near enough the same time.
Did hundreds of miles in a couple of Morris Minor convertibles & always happy to bumble along enjoying al fresco motoring & apart from 30mph speed limits not worried about breaking speed limits.

WJNB I absolutely take your point. I still miss my 55bhp Citroen AX. I chose the Scenic to make the family happy and they love it. I also liked that it's slow (there's not much out there slower) and modern-efficient. I have an old bike for tearing about on and I nearly rode that up to Oban on that day...
Anyhow that's good news from you Bully! I got some good news myself today: 4 points and a £270 fine. They let me off lightly up there in Argyll. Phew!

I'm hugely paranoid about the Scots approach to speeding - I honestly think it's because the crime rate in buttfk middle of nowhere is so low they've nothing else to do. Compare with how many you see in urban areas in England.
I went on a motorbike tour round Scotland a couple of months ago and my paranoia levels were high - I was riding an MV Agusta F4 and I never exceeded the speed limit anywhere. The crazy places I saw speed traps and the number of them was insane and as for the cameras on the A roads....
Obviously the approach works (I didn't speed) but neither was it any safer. It just made me paranoid.

I ride and drive in Scotland and don't worry too much about speeding - I don't really find there is much in the way of oppressive enforcement on the fun roads I use. Where I am aware of it being likely (Glasgow to Ft William) I just adjust my speed accordingly if I have to, but more likely find an alternative route - which is often quieter anyway.
It's important to have an idea of enforcement levels where you are, and if you are doing "silly" speeds there is a big risk, but I would never think there is a need to be paranoid. (At least not yet - if significantly more funds were directed at the Polis it might go that way, but they are struggling enough as it is so highly unlikely)

Should I ever venture from the smug rich south of England to Scotland & stick a flag of St Andrews badge on the car (to replace the existing union & St Georges flags), wore tartan trews & had some bagpipes on the back seat would I be treated less like an unwelcome outsider should I be stopped for some traffic offence? I would hasten to add that I'm willing to spend lots of money on hotels & in shops & restaurants.
Keep meaning to go to Scotland on holiday to visit John O` Groats etc but then get put off by the risk of not spotting a speed limit change and being had so I went to Ireland and Germany instead.
It was a great drive and I did not have to worry so much about gazing at the speedo. No children and animals died and while we certainly made a contribution to the local economies, we did not pay any parasites for speeding.

Very wise. Unless you have some burning desire tick off a box on a bucket list, forget it.Trust me, there is nothing remotely interesting or inviting about JoG even on a fine day.
Duncansby Head isn't too bad but it's a long way to go to look at a lighthouse and some cliffs.
