It's a minimum of 0.2 miles for a follow check.
Isn't that only about 7 or 8 seconds at 100mph?

My maths might be totally wrong though.

Even less for VASCAR, only 0.125 miles.

"It's rather tricky to squint your eyes trying to spot blue lights tucked behind a grill in my rear view mirror"

These days is it not digital rather than analogue with rectangular LED-type strips either behind the grille or fitted within it. Depending on the location and angle of light they can appear darker or lighter than the surroudings.

Even though the image below is taken from t'internet and therefore public domain, part of the registration has been removed (PC was too good and had to be kept) and the detail shown is clearly too much for a rear view mirror shufti. I've seen a few - no not before being stopped - and there was no glint just rectangular features in the grille.

With other BMW models including 4x4s e.g. an X5 they may be used in pairs arranged vertically, in above-and-below fashion with two or three pairs used. Same game, different spot.

I look for no dealer supplying sticker on the rear windscreen, any extra antenna at all, basic equipment with no extras on reasonably high powered vehicle, rear shelf for any out of the ordinary equipment at all, broad shoulders (yeah, lol but I do),car less than 5 years old.
All of these points are assessed BEFORE overtaking and then the grill is still checked once passed.

ANY vehicle coming up at +85 and I slow down to -80 to allow it to progress pass me.If the vehicle is certainly not
a police vehicle I will then proceed at my previous speed using good road craft to make progress.

I've also found all unmarked cars tend to have the model designation deleted

Riding a bit low at the back...due to all the kit in the boot.

Two up can mean two rear view mirrors.

Rectangular / boxy contraption on the rear parcel shelf.

Even so the newer type of grille lights are often obvious approaching from the front or in the rear view mirror.

A virtual brownie point is available to anyone on the move who can spot the camera orifice peeping out from behind a transparent character in the rear number plate sonar

All good stuff for practising observational skills smile
