Blocked from overtaking
Discussion
Bank holiday A road. NSL, usual nobs doing 50, & very few places to safely overtake. Eventually get to long straight where its possible to overtake, even with oncoming traffic, as nice wide bypass. I check mirrors, indicate, drop it a cog, pull-out & floor it. What does the nob in front do just as I am starting to pass him?? Floors it so I have no way of continuing the manoeuvre & have to drop in behind him again, braking hard. wker!
1. I don't understand what he was trying to achieve
2. It was fking scary & downright dangerous
3. Is that sort of behaviour legal??

And when you get past these dick heads, a few miles up the road they will pull up along side ranting "Ive got you on Dash Cam, Got on Dash Cam !!! "
Well shove your dash cam up your fking Jacksie.
Easy answer - Get something much quicker and pass before the other driver has woken up, just like idiots who give one flash of the turn signal and pull out in front on a motorway.

Yep, some cock did it to me the other day, too.1. I don't understand what he was trying to achieve

The difference is that I wasn't particularly surprised, because I expect idiots to do idiotic things.
pain in the arse, only had it happen once or twice , same situation
I just ease off and drop in behind, would much rather have the idiot in front where I can see them, than get past them and have them go nuts and tailgate me.
Had it happen a second time actually but it was an artic, every time I went to overtake he would swerve to the right and try and take me off the road!!! Was like a scene out of Duel, not sure what was going through his mind as he was going 45 and it was a clear bit of road to overtake and he did i 2-3 times before I got past , one wheel on the verge. . That was when i was young and stupid, now I would have given him a wide berth after the first time and stayed well back

As a poster has said above, some people view a line of cars as a queue and treat anyone overtaking as queue-jumpers.
It's dangerous and pathetic on the other driver's behalf however you should always be prepared for some cock making a silly move like that when overtaking by ensuring that when you decide to pass, your speed is high enough for them not to be able to match or exceed it whilst you're completing the manoeuvre.

Get a much faster car.
A couple of months ago was on the M11 in my Caterham, making progress round about the NSL and a guy in a white car entered off a slip road and I moved into the centre lane as he merged into lane 1.We were both running parallel, I had a group cars behind, so I started to speed up and this guy just kept accelerated and kept up.
I accelerated a bit more to make space and it was then I spotted the camera van on the bridge and spent the next 2 weeks checking my letterbox every day.
In answer to part of your question, the rules on being overtaken are clear. Hard to prove intent in most cases I would have thought though.
Rule 168
Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.

I like the way the highway code has numbers of contradictions in order that both parties can point the finger at each other.Rule 168

Rule 162
Before overtaking you should make sure
- the road is sufficiently clear ahead
- road users are not beginning to overtake you
- there is a suitable gap in front of the road user you plan to overtake.
Contradicting with rule 168 in as much as having to drop back to make space for the overtaking party not having a suitable gap in front of you.

Am I being a pedant if I say I can't see a contradiction?Rule 162

You are driving along, leaving a 2 second gap to the car in front, in line with the HC. A car overtakes you and fills that space, also in line with the HC. The HC then reminds you to maintain the 2 second gap to the car in front.
Rules for overtaking
1) Dont indicate it just forewarns the knuckle dragger's
2) get a 400bhp+ car (or even better a super bike)
3) hang back a few car lengths so when you do over take (where safe to do so) by the time you are beside the knuckle dragger the speed differential is so great even a P1 wouldn't be accelerative enough able to stop you making your safe overtaking move
optional for old duffers
4) wave when you are 800 yards ahead when they finally have worked out:
a) they have been over taken
b) they are outraged by this
c) where the lights and horns are

Or it could be viewed as not in line with the HC for a vehicle to place itself inside the 2 second gap of a vehicle it is overtaking. (Is that a "suitable gap"?).I know in the real world hardly anyone leaves a 2 second gap.... most times you'll probably see 1 second. And vehicles will still overtake and place themselves in to that 1 second gap leaving only 0.5 second between 3 vehicles.

even a 1 second gap seems beyond some people! Which does make it tricky if you're behind a bunch of them 'waiting their turn' - queue mentality... all a few feet apart but no one daring to overtake from further back.I know in the real world hardly anyone leaves a 2 second gap.... most times you'll probably see 1 second. as others have said, I try to hang back and get overspeed vs the queue and watch every vehicle I'm overtaking very carefully for changes in direction or indicators! If no opportunities for this come up, join the herd and trundle.... which was my fate on Saturday on the A272
I Had a blocker this morning on a country lane.
The way he was driving caused me to pre-judge him before knowing for sure, but he had a 330d so a bit of oopmh that could leave me hanging ( 1.3 litre rolling sheddy skip of crap here )
I had dropped back several lengths and closed the gap at full throttle before sling shotting past when there was no more than a rizzla paper gap between our bumpers.
he then booted it when he realised what was happening ( tell tale black cloud of soot and ash ) , but momentum was on my side and i was passed ( just! ) - he can go fk himself!

A hard road to over take on for sure .. very few oportunities unless you are on a motor bike and even then its not so easy.
Sometimes just better to enjoy the scenery on that road.
