Car parked on strip of grass separating two roads, grass is maintained by council. People can and do walk on it.

Does the car require insurance?

Real life situation, just curious as to the insurance thing.

If the car isn't SORNed it needs insurance.

Car is SORN'd but had to be driven on the road to get where it is. Don't know if SORN was declared before or after moving to where it is now.

It'll need insurance if it's being used on a road or other public place.

And 'used' includes being parked up and unattended.

And tax. Not that it's legally parked anyway.

Thanks all, After knowing but not being able to prove who trashed my car several years ago I'm really hoping the Karma fairy will shortly pay them a visit smile

Is it not the case that for a car to be SORN it has to be on private land with the permission of the landowner?

The only place an untaxed vehicle may not be stored/used is a road which is maintained at public expense. I assume that would normally extend to the road verge, but it might depend on just how wide the "grassy strip" is.

No requirement in the Vehicle and Excise Registration Act for you to have the landowners' permission so that's not relevant to SORN - though of course if you leave your car on someone else's land without permission you may run into plenty of other problems.
