Quite simply, if you view cyclists as relatively greater hazards than most other hazards that you encounter whilst driving then you are incompetent.
I think you're right wrt hazards, but the risk of personal injury is much greater when encountering a cyclist than say a patch of diesel on a roundabout, and therefore I will treat them with additional care.I find most cyclists are OK, last week I came across a club out for a ride on country lanes. They were cycling in single file, in groups of 3 or 4 so I could overtake a small group at a time safely. However, there are the other group, like one yesterday where a mother had her young baby with her and was cycling on the A road despite there being a perfectly serviceable cycle lane separated from the road by a verge. The cycle lane is there for your safety, please use it!
Irrespective of whether a driver has a rational or irrational dislike of cyclists/pedestrians why would that driver not give a cyclist as much clearance as possible when overtaking. It requires barely any inconvenience in the majority of circumstances and where there is inconvenience then perhaps the overtake is inappropriate in the first place.
I would rather there were no cyclists on the road because they hold me up, but currently they have equal rights in law to be there and whether they ride responsibly or not I am not inclined to intimidate, bully or ultimately injure them because I'm not an idiot.
