We`re looking to go for around two weeks early / mid December.

So far from internet surfing only it`s looking like fly into Bangkok spend 2/3 days there, then fly to Koh Samui 4/5 days then 4/5 days in Phuket, to fy back to Bangkok the day before we fly back to London.

We`re after a more Luxury 4-5* type trip.

Any hints, tips advice or recommendations would be amazing

In Koh Samui we've booked sala samui again for next year. Quiet luxury and an easy taxi to Fishermans village for Friday night market. Massage every day on the beach as well as bbq with Kopi if you want a break from the hotel.

Just a gentle heads up that the weather will be much better on the Phuket side, was on Koh Tao and Koh Phangan for Christmas and NYE which was warm(25ish) but overcast nearly everyday with a chance of rain. Phuket and Ao Nang was next on the list and very hot (32-35) and never a cloud in the sky for 2 weeks

If you are doing 4 5 star then frankly it doesn't matter where you go, you will see nothing of Thailand. Book the nearest one to the airport and stay there.

Much better to spend your time flying into Krabi, then getting a transfer (personal bus then longboat) to West Railay for 2 nights (Raikay Village), boat down to Phi Phi, then look at also heading to Lanta (Houben Hotel).

To really go somewhere stunning then get a group speedboat to Koh Lipe and stay at Serendipity Resort there. Heaven, but dont get the big boat as it's a long and cramped journey.

In Bangkok you really need to eat at Issaya one evening for something very special. Try a street food market also, that's the best way to eat in Thailand.

Want to clarify on that? What has the hotel got to do with how much of "Thailand' you see? Since when do you have to stay in a hotel for the whole time? Thousands of day trips to see cultural Thailand in all locations mentioned.

I know what you`re saying, but I`m not sure Mrs Mop would appreciate slumming it in order to see Thailand.

Koh Lanta is a nice mixture of good quality hotels and relaxed Thai culture, you could do a Koh Lanta and Phuket easily.

Phuket is a a massive traffic jam with overcrowded beaches lined with McDonalds type restaurants.

You could drive an hour north to Khao Lak which has some lovely beaches or, as a previous poster said, head south to Krabi.

I personally wouldn't base the whole time in Phuket as there there are some lovely islands nearby, but Phuket does have nice resorts like Karon, Kata etc but bear in mind Phuket is huge and doesn't really feel like an island

It really depends if you would prefer a small island that's easy to explore or a large one that offers everything. Consider Krabi airport which is 30 mins from Ao Nang area, Air Asia are cheap and efficient

Agreed that you don't want to slum it in Thailand I did in 2 'hotels' and it was awful but stupidly cheap, thankfully on average the standard of 3&4 star places is good/ very good. Always worth a quick google on the suggested areas/islands to see which ones appeal most

Because if you stay in a 5 star you don't meet the people and you could be anywhere, Pick a brand you like and stay there. they will all do the same trips in the same badly driven mini bus.
Ray Lay is a waste of time today, 30 years ago it was worth asking which hotel, today they all have everything. hire a car and follow your nose to see Thailand, I just spent 10 days ridding to Pucket and back, Pucket is a dump now, but the places on the way are fantastic, we rode to the Ferry to Ko Lanta, went across sitting with the crew who love the bike, being given mango by the locals on the way to market.
Stay on nice Thai owned 2 and 3 stars and have great time with real hospitality there are loads and at the moment they are empty.

You on't need to slum it, Thia owned hotels are great and the hospitality is just so much better than the chains, Beach Terrace in Ah Nang is 3 stars, has new rooms and is the only hotel that is actually on the beach, 1500 baht a night for BB for two at the moment.

Was in Khao Lak last year. Mid-November. Lovely beaches - as you say. Undeveloped and close to Khao Sok national park.

me and the misses did bangkok - koh samui - koh Phangan - Bangkok. Really enjoyed it.

Would like to have gone koh tao though! Would probably miss koh phanhan out and go koh tao if we were to do it again, but it was a few years back and we wanted to go to the full moon party.

This year we're going kuala lumpur - langkawi - koh lipe - kuala lumpur. looking forward to it!

Krabi Resort in Ao Nang is also on the beach, we loved it.

I wouldn't do both Phuket and Samui on the same trip - the experience will be too similar (both large, highly developed resort islands).

Better to pick just one and if you want a third destination go for a smaller island like Koh Phangan, Koh Tao or Koh Phi Phi, or a different city such as Chiang Mai.
