Police drivers - would you

I've been fortunate enough to have had a passenger ride with a top police driving instructor in the past.
The level of concentration is unbelievable. Fantastic car control, anticipation, reaction, perception and an almost 6th sense for what other road users are doing.
'My' drive last approximately 20 - 30 minutes and was full commentary for most of it.
Try doing this at normal speed.

That was enlightening. One thing that jumps out is the amount of concentration devoted to what's going on behind "Mirrors!". Surely no-one's keeping up? dmsims said:
Thats an impressive piece of driving. The newspaper one was nothing special. Reminded me of my normal drive to work. Anyone with a driving license should be able to do that, in my opinion, and just because you are a civvy is no excuse for poor thought process or skills while driving.
However, the youtube one, that was class driving and certainly of the standard I would expect of a police driver. It was very good indeed. Very impressive.

I watched the video without reading any comments and came to the conclusion that it was very good driving, I expected to be going against the grain
For an accident to occur I'd expect an unsuspecting member of the public would have to be driving without due care and attention to not notice the copper and pull into his path.

"South Devon's narrow, winding, busy lanes"
That wasn't what I was expecting when I read the above. That's a motorway compared to most roads in that area!
That's because it's the usual newspaper sensationalist bs. That wasn't what I was expecting when I read the above. That's a motorway compared to most roads in that area!
That's an A road. Specifcally the A3052 between Halfway House and Clyst St Mary.
I know it well as two of Mrs RD's elderly aunts lived in Topsham.
The video begins here - https://goo.gl/maps/2AqJY1WzfJ32 - just before the Cat & Fiddle Inn.

I was driving behind some old lady who seemed oblivious to the blue lights and siren rapidly coming up behind us, so I flashed my headlights once to prompt her to look in rear view. She then saw the emergency vehicle and came to a dead stop right there and then in the lane, no attempt to pull to the side or anything. How can that possibly help?
It really ought to be taught in the driving test about making your intentions regards accommodating emergency vehicles clear, consistent and helpful - e.g. slowing down, not stopping, unless it's already crawling speed so they don't have to adjust their position or speed unduely.

Really should be taught and tested.
Saw a light yesterday in my rvm but could see the car behind had no idea. Would have been best to slow and let past but the car behind would almost certainly have just overtook me, happened before. Maintained slowing speed until he saw it then I braked gently (you would need to see the place and it's too difficult to describe)
In Florence today and an ambulance came past with a two stage lvolume siren which I thought was a good idea rather than off then on at full volume. Still allows everyone to be aware of it when they are happy the way is clear without being so loud it disturbs everyone, but rising in volume when needing people to react. We should do that on uk ones.
Nice little clip, that. It's a shame it was so brief though. For those interested, the original (not-compressed-to-death-by-a-newspaper) version can be found on the Sergeant's Facebook here, or on his Twitter here. It's still not amazing quality, but far better than the pixellated bandwidth-saving version on the paper site.

In fact watching that it made me think what a bunch of stupid cnts most of the other road users were ...... most of them seemed blind as well as deaf ...... good driving from "old Bill" IMO ...... crap driving by most of the rest.
Why do people insist of hitting the brakes as well? I've never understood that...move over to the left and let off, there is mostly never any need to brake and swerve.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
