I bought an approved used BMW on this very day 6 years ago. The dealership sorted out the tax and arranged 12 months plus the additional few days at the end of September for the normal 12 month price. Is that sort of thing possible under the new system?
If you buy tax in the last couple of business days of a month, it's 12mo-plus-a-few-days. Always has been.

There is no major "new system".

The changes that took place two years ago merely removed the round piece of colourful paper, and introduced tax being automatically refunded on keeper change. No more than that.

When I bought my car from someone I knew, we didn't complete the sale (transfer ownership etc) until the 1st of the next month... I just 'drove his car for 2 weeks' using my own insurance policy for it. 1st of the month, he does the online transfer and I set up my DD using the ref code on the V5c.

He didn't waste 2 weeks of the tax he had paid for that month, I didn't have to pay a whole month extra.

Granted that only works in certain circumstances though

He then cancelled his DD 2 days later, and I got an alarming letter saying 'My DD had failed'. Rang up to enquire and because the system see's my details against the car the letter that was meant for him as he cancelled his DD came to me. Got to love the DVLA. I wrote the guy I spoke to's name, and the time and date of the call on the letter and popped it with the rest of the paperwork for the car just in case

Perhaps they can buy a working system for any other European country that tax by the day ...

My SORN-ed car was taken for an MOT with tax, so drove it to the garage. Passed MOT after changing a brake component, but the dealer needed to fit one part a couple of days later.

However, as it was no longer a "drive to a pre-arranged MOT", officially I would need tax then - but there was no way I was going to pay tax for a month just to get the repair completed before the car is stored again until next spring. Strange system, that taxing.

Indeed. Where you find somebody stupid enough to let a total stranger drive around in a car you're legally responsible for.

IIRC the exemption also covers driving to and from the repairs to get the MOT.

Guys - You are not going to believe this.

So, as by recommendation on this forum, and I thought clearly the right thing to do would be SORN the car, so I did.

As it's the first of the month today - I now want to buy my tax.

My V5 cert arrived yesterday, too.

So I go down the option of - Use your V5 document ref number etc...

and I get this:

"Successful application already completed
This vehicle has been taxed or notified as off the road within the last 5 days.

If you have recently purchased the vehicle this could have been done by the previous keeper. You still need to tax. Use the new keeper supplement V5C/2 to apply again online. If unable to do so, please tax at a Post Office.

If you have a V5C registration certificate (log book) that's in your name you can check the vehicle status online. Please note the online checking service does not update immediately, continue to check this service over the next 5 days.

If you have notified the vehicle as off the road in error and need to drive it immediately read the following link for more information on how to tax after SORN"

Brilliant.

I now go back to the start, and use my V5 new keepers slip,

And then I get this:

"Taxing a vehicle
Unable to use service
Unfortunately you cannot use this service as the V5C/2 reference number you have used is invalid.

You should have received a V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book) in your name for the vehicle, please use the reference number from this to renew your vehicle tax.

If you have not received the V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book) for the vehicle, in your name, please complete form V62 - application for a vehicle registration certificate and send to DVLA Swansea. Click here to get V62

Start again"

What an absolute joke!

I'm trying to go about things the legal way and they make it nigh on impossible. I wish I didn't bother SORN'ing it now. FML.

I bought a new snotter on Wednesday, SORNed it, and have just got back from the Post Office. Computer said Yes. The only issue with using the PO is you can't use the monthly direct debit if that's your preference, it's 6 months or 12 months only.

Guys, SORN is an acronym S.O.R.N , not a verb.

You can't 'SORNED' or 'SORN'D'.

Incredible.

^^This^^

It's a PITA that you can't use the online system and have to go and stand in a queue for 30 minutes (been there, done that, and am still waiting for the t-shirt). rolleyes
Even worse if it's a weekend and you have to wait for a day and a half for the PO to open again.

You might be forgiven for thinking that technological progress is supposed to to be progressive rather than regressive.

Apart from completely redeveloping the VED computer systems, which have never needed to cope with any more granularity than months.
Maybe they should have taken this into consideration before changing the system then.

We need to invest a few hundred billion pounds in a Manhattan Project-like endeavour to create a computer which can count in days.

Well, that's the whole point, isn't it?

The changes a couple of years back were actually really, REALLY minor. Auto tax refund on keeper change, no round piece of paper. That's it.
Now you want major system redesigns. For what reason? Well, not very much... To save you a few quid every time you change car. Woo.
